In the past, I've created my assembly file and put all the connector in the main assembly. Then I'd generate a wire harness. I was able to then drag and drop the connectors into the harness subassembly via the browser. However, now I'm getting the error message...

...and it won't restructure. I recently upgraded to Inventor 2020 and Vault Professional 2020, previously running Inventor 2019 and Vault Basic 2019. Perhaps the upgrades are causing this error or files aren't migrated...?

In your Inventor project file do you have any library locations defined?

Yes I do and the connectors I'm trying to demote to the harness subassembly reside in those library paths.

When a file is part of the library path it can't be modified. Create another project or edit that one and remove the library path info. That way you can make modifications to it.

In your original image, there's two assembly files listed..

Is the connector file an assembly? Basically in the image you provide which assembly is which?

P_KLIXON_2TC14_CIR-BRKR-ASY.iam is a Library assembly it's an iAssembly. That iAssembly is in the main assembly. However, that's not a file I'm trying to demote so I don't know why Inventor is even concerned with that file.

VX-ATE1110.iam is the main assembly. VX-ATE1410.iam is the harness assembly. P_CIRCULAR_MS3452W16-10P.ipt is one of the connectors I'm trying to demote. Even if I try to demote P_CIRCULAR_MS3452W16-10P.ipt by itself, I get the same error so I don't understand why I'm getting an error for. P_KLIXON_2TC14_CIR-BRKR-ASY.iam.

Thank you for your post.

What is the path location for the new assembly that you are trying to create when you demote the part?

I am thinking that it in a library location that you will not be able to write to with your current Vault project file.

In order to make any changes to library files you need to create a new project file the does not have those location as a library and be in the cone of influence of the IPJ file.

Thank you again.

The new assembly is in the project workspace. I'm able to copy and paste the connectors in the new assembly and the reestablish the assembly constraints but that's a very long and tedious way of doing it. It shouldn't have to be done that way especially since I've had no problems demoting connectors to harness assemblies many times this way before. The only thing I can think that is different are the upgrades but perhaps there's something else I'm missing.
