This is something that happens every time I need to make a change to a sub-assembly while an upper assembly is open.

In this scenario, I have a top level assembly open. I needed to make a change to the stair sub assembly, highlighted below. I intend on modifying the stair assembly.

I have the representation window open to show you what the representation settings are before I edit the stair assembly.

I opened the stair assembly from the model browser, edited some parts, saved, and returned to the top level assembly tab.

This is how it now displays the stair assembly. I have not changed the view representation settings, but the stair assembly is now displaying itself as primary but it's still says it's the default view.

Things that don't fix the problem:
Local Update
Global Update
Rebuild All

Update Mass

The only way to get the stair assembly to actually go back to showing as default is to suppress and then un-suppress the star assembly within the top level assembly. This is fine for such a small assembly, but when this happens to a much much larger assembly, suppressing and un-suppressing is a ridiculous waste of time.

Is there a setting or something that disables this behavior?

Do you have the work planes on in the sub assembly itself or other components such as skeleton sketches? If so, turn them off at the part level and they will not appear in upper level assemblies. If you need to reference a plane in an upper level assy, you can always turn it on from the level you are by diving down in the model browser and turning it on there. Then, shut it off when completed.

For the stairs in the example, everything is driven by a skeleton sketch. Planes will be wherever they're needed. When reference objects are not needed, I turn them off, as shown in the first picture in my original post.

That doesn't even matter, though. This behavior happens every time I modify a part/sub-assembly that's currently being used by another open assembly.

Compare the two photos in my original post. I only deleted a hole from the stairs, and the second image is what I come back to when I return to the upper level assembly. Again, this happens every time I modify a part that's in use by an upper level assembly.

I've only been using Inventor since 2022 (currently on 2024), but this behavior has been the same in every version. It's like a glitch, but it's been functioning like this for so long. I have no idea if it's an intended feature or not.

Unfortunately, I have never experienced what you are referring to. Can you pack and go your assembly to look to see if we can investigate it? If you cant share, can you do a screen capture video of what you are doing?

Everything inside "Origin" folder will not follow ViewRep.

Make sure all the parts in assembly use same ViewRep.

Beside "Default", I also use "Design".

"Design" will have planes, axis, points visible for constrains.

Also different appearance.

I have noticed that Inventor parent assemblies sometimes seem to cache obsolete view and position reps of child assemblies. The deeper the nesting the worse the problem seems to be. We typically have 6-12 levels of nesting between the top-level assembly and the lowest level sub-assembly.

I don't know how to force Inventor to flush the bad data and recompute from the bottom up. Sometimes I delete the upper level reps and recreate them.

I believe, but can't prove that the problem got worse after the introduction of Model States.

It only seems to be happening with user created sketches and planes.

@swalton
I think what you're describing is what I'm dealing with. After calming down a bit, I noticed that this doesn't happen with every model edit like I claimed before. Now that I'm looking, I'll try to see if I can discover a pattern.

@johnsonshiue

I'm all up to date on drivers and windows updates, but this was an issue on my old computer as well. I'm going to try to evaluate the situation more, but I feel somewhat better knowing swalton is having similar issues.

Part of me thinks it's network related, but I'll try to be more observant.

I have also seen this issue. In our case it did function as intended in IV2020, but after upgrading to IV2024 I see the same problem as you.

I can get it right by changing the referenced View rep to Primary and OK it. Then changing the referenced View Rep back to the wanted one and set it associative again to force the update. Probably more time efficient than suppress/unsuppress.

Just make sure that you have made your planes invisible, not turned off by the Object visibility filer. The Object visibility is sort of temporary and a different function than making planes individually invisible.

Torbjørn

I recognize this behaviour very much, and it's frustrating beyond acceptable levels honestly. It happens so many times that changes in sublevels trigger outdatet viewreps in the toplevels. Planes that randomly turn visible, sketches that show up and wont go away. So far you either have to switch to the primary viewrep and switch back to where you were before and it "might" work normal again, or you will have to open every sublevel between top and the level you were editing individually to rebuild all and save. Almost like the sublevels dont update themselfs when not explicitely opened seperately and purely loaded in the toplevel. But no guarantees it does indeed update. This combined with the jumpy behaviour where sublevels lose viewrep associativity all the time (with section view use etc.) makes me genuinely hate viewreps, but cant work without it.

Still on 2024 sadly and preparing to upgrade in the comming months somewhere. (System integration issues beyond Inventor...)
