I think this is the same question asked by Kevin Wehner back in 2004 when Autodesk said they were working on a solution for this. See attached drawing. The internal hole note and the external hole note are of the same size. On the Internal note, I can double click it and modify it to whatever I want. We like to use the custom designation value. We would like to use that as well on the external thread but are unable to.

If you right-click >Format > Custom Thread Designation.

You can edit your Threads.xls spreadsheet and make the custom thread be what you want. Is that what you are wanting to do? Also, in the styles and standards you can choose to use the custom thread designation in the dimensions style > notes and leaders tab > threads formatting section.

Sort of. I guess I just was wondering why you can't double-click on it and modify it in a similar way as the internal thread notes. For example, if you edit Thread1 and uncheck the Full Length and set the Length to 10 mm, then in the idw I may want to add the length to the hole note, but there is no way to do that. It's not a big deal as I could just add a regular dimension, but was wondering why I couldn't have the same options. Thanks.

Hi! Indeed, it would be nice to have a way to override it. But, the issue here is after that, what drives the change? Inventor Hole/Thread workflow is totally driven by thread.xls. The thread data is either from the table or manually overridden by the user in the model. There isn't much the user can change within the drawing. Maybe you can create custom sketch symbols or leader text to override the notes.

Many thanks!

Hi Johnson;

No, there is no question about overriding the value of the thread. The question is why the Edit Hole Note DB is not available in the cursor menu for the external thread? For example - if the shaft thread is changed from full length to a distance - the thread note doesn't reflect the information. It shows the designation of the thread only. To indicate a length of it - a separate dimension has to be added to the drawing. To achieve the definition of the external thread as per attached image one has to go through the Text Editor and link parameters to the thread note. Which is not very convenient.

Cheers,

Igor.

Hi! I believe it was probably incomplete implementation. I don't recall why external thread note behaves differently than internal thread note. I will need to follow up with the project team.

Hi Craig,

I did look at this issue with the project team together. There is a bit of confusion here. The Thread feature (cosmetic thread on a cylinder face) is actually different than the Threaded Hole feature. The Thread annotation (internal or external) has always been Text Editor, while the Threaded Hole leverages the Hole Note command. Hole Note dialog was designed specific to holes, not for protrusions.

Many thanks!

The only way for Custom Dimensioning of an external Thread I found was to Hide Dimension Value then launch the Text Editor and there use the Parameter like "d1" with the chosen precision to add that Parameter Value.
