topic Update parts that have been modified in the assembly in Inventor Forum

I have taken 5 individual parts and built a puzzle cube as an assemble. At the assembly level, I did a revolve to create a puzzle sphere. Now I want to take the changes to the individual parts in the sphere and update or save the parts so they can be 3D printed. Any suggestions? Is this possible? I believe it is possible since students have been telling me that they did it two years ago with the old teacher.

Assembly level features do not transfer down to the parts..

Parts can be edited in the context of an assembly though so that the edits are actually being performed on the parts and not at the assembly level..

There is also an addin https://apps.autodesk.com/INVNTOR/en/Detail/Index?id=4113747616755499758&appLang=en&os=Win64

But I'm not sure if it will work for your situation..

Hi @Anonymous

You can try the derived assembly approach.

1. Create as derived assembly from your the "representation/new substitute LOD" in the browser

2. Give it a file name (part file) to save to disk

3. Choose the "Maintain solids separately" in the derived dialog.

4. Save it

5. Open the derived part

6. The browser will show different solids and you can turn on or turn off the solids using the visibility cmd

7. Then export each solid to an STL file

8. Alternately you can enter the 3DPrint environment and work with them (STL, Mesh etc.)

I know its not straightforward but i think derived might be an easy way for you to export the bodies with the assembly features applied.

Thanks

Thanks. Could you provide more details? I wasn't able to follow your
instructions. What is LOD? Do I use the Create Derived Substitutes under
Assemble?

Thanks!

Hi @Anonymous

Yes, its the create derived assembly under substitute.

There are multiple ways to achieve this I guess. I have written a generic document explaining derive and how to do it. One method is creating view representations in your master assembly and deriving each solid to an individual part file. Another method is to derive all solid into one single part file and then manipulating the visibilities in that part file.

I have tried to document the workflow - please see atatched document and let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks

-shiva

Hi @Anonymous

Thanks for the update. The video shows the revolve feature being created inside the part when the part is being edited-in-place. Originally you had said "At the assembly level, I did a revolve" and I had assumed that you were creating assembly features at the assembly level. Hence the disconnect.

Glad its' resolved.

Thanks
