Chamfer edges by rule instead of selection?

When 3D printing overhangs, it is useful to chamfer the bottom face to eliminate the need for supports. Is there a way to automatically identify these downward-facing surfaces and apply a chamfer to one of their edges?

Any method similar to a rule fillet, which does not need to be updated manually if the geometry changes?

Hi! I don't think there is a command to do that. You might consider using Facedraft instead. But, you still need to pick the individual draft faces.

Many thanks!

There is nothing "automatic". It fully different depending on orientation while 3d printing and design. It is something you have to handle not the software. 🙂
That's why you are designer. That makes you different than others around you.

That's...just silly. Plenty of features update automatically; it's the whole point of history-based parametric design.

Any time you find yourself doing something overly repetitive, or requiring dozens of clicks, you should absolutely look for a way to let the software handle it, not you. If you're a designer you should spend your time designing.

Or maybe that's what makes me different than others around me...

Anyway here's the solution I came up with, for anyone searching this later. 1) Check the normals of all faces to see which ones are facing down. 2) Find which edges of those faces are shared with the vertical surface. 3) Chamfer those edges where the overhang meets the wall.

https://autode.sk/31Y1eS6

1) Check the normals of all faces to see which ones are facing down- Is this part is done manually or by software (like draft analysis)?

2) Find which edges of those faces are shared with the vertical surface- Isn't that a repetitive process and doesn't it require dozens of clicks?

3) Chamfer those edges where the overhang meets the wall- By what? Is there any automatic feature?

Would you please elaborate your suggestions please?
