Exploded an Assembly

Hi,

I am familiar on how you can create a presentation file in Autodesk Inventor for an assembly. What I would like to know, I have a copy print with an exploded view of the parts for a particular assembly from a client.

Will I need the original assembly file and parts files for this layout in a format that will allow me use it as a presentation file in Autodesk Inventor.

Any advice and suggestion will be accepted.

Yes.

To create a presentation file in Inventor you need to select an iam file.

Can it work if the particular assembly file is created in AutoCad?

Will I be able to use this feature in Inventor with a universal file format.

To create presentation files you need an Inventor iam files..

The first thing the presentation environment asks is for an iam file..

You can create ipt/iam files from neutral cad formats like step files,etc... but you NEED iam files to work with Inventor (and that iam must include any sub iam and all ipt files)..

Its also possible to create iam/ipt files from Autocad 3d files..

@Anonymous Export the Autocad to IGES... Open in Inventor...

You will need to create ipt files using that method then create an assembly from those ipt files..

Hi all,

I will attach an image later of the exploded drawing to give you an idea of what I am trying to achieve. Hopefully then you will be able to advise on the best possible options. I suppose I am trying to re-create an exploded view by using an assembly and parts already drawn from a similar software product.

Hi all again,

I have now attached a pdf drawing showing the exploded view of a drawing. What I would appreciate is your advice or suggestions after referencing this drawing. I would like to re-create this exploded view within Inventor, if that is possible?

Is it feasible to reproduce this if you have a full assembly and all the associated part files. I would just like to be able to open it in Inventor as an assembly with the option of exploding the view. This would be used for training purposes in our work practices.

I would appreciate any guidance or recommendations.

Yes, exploded views such as you show in your image are easy in Inventor.

Hi,

This particular assembly was created by another company who have only provided me with a copy print. But what do I need in terms of files, formats and detail, so I could import to Inventor and create an exploded assembly view using the presentation file feature in Autodesk Inventor.

You will, of course, have to model all of the parts and assemble them.

Can't really do anything without parts.

What is in this AutoCAD file?

3D AutoCAD solids or surfaces models?

You refer to only prints.

Do you have only 2D?

So are you saying that I would need all the part files and the assembly as 3D AutoCad solids or surfaces if it was created using AutoCad.

If I could receive the assembly and part files in an iges or step format, I could import then into Inventor.

Hi,

I do appreciate your input. The Presentation File feature in Inventor is a great option if you have created an .iam assembly.

Do you think that trying to import part files in (AutoCad 3D files , Iges or Step formats) from a similar software product is really a practical in trying to re-create an exploded view?

From your professional opinion if the original exploded aspect has not been created with Inventor initially, then it would be difficult to take universal files for this from another design software and transfer them onto Inventor and get the same quality.

Your opinion is appreciated.

First of all a presentation (*.ipn) is simply a set of tools to automate the process.

It is not really needed.

But what is needed is parts and assembly(sub-assemblies). (Just like in the real world.)

That should be obvious.

The source of the parts/assemblies would be of little concern to me as long as the geometry was done correctly.

Okay, just take the situation for a moment please.

If you were to create an exploded assembly with Inventor using external imported files.

What are the conditions you would expect in respect to detail, properties and format for imported files.

Or is it not worth the attempt as the software products are not really compatible enough the reach the same level of quality.

This is largely a user issue, not a software issue.

I was creating perfectly good 3D geometry in AutoCAD in the last century.
