Help - how to stop opening files in Read-Only Mode in Inventor 2020

My company recently upgraded to Inventor 2020. I accidentally opened a file in read-only mode, but then opened it in standard mode so I can edit it. However, now whenever I try to open an Inventor file, it automatically tries to open it in read-only mode. We do not utilize the Vault, so I am not sure what is causing the issue. I honestly have no use for read-only mode. Is there a way to set it back to normal, or to disable read-only mode from being the default method of opening my files? Even if there was a way to disable read-only mode permanently, that would work for me.

Currently running Windows 10, 64 bit.

Did you try resetting the "Open With" (Default Program) program through Windows?

Right click on file.. Select "open with" and pick Inventor and set it to always open with that.. Or type "chose a default app for each type of file" into Windows search and change the extension program association there..

Is this just one file or several files doing this. Because you can RC on the files in Windows explorer and uncheck the "Read Only" box under the General tab.

I took the question to be that Inventor itself was opening in the "Read Only Mode" we have now.. Not that the file itself was read only..

Inventor 2020 added this option for those only needing to view and measure.

Oops, @mcgyvr , I meant to reply to @Anonymous .

@Anonymous are you opening the file by double clicking on it, or are you starting full Inventor first and then opening the file with Inventor?

@mcgyvr I see where you can get that out of the OP's comments. I re-read it and see both of our responses as possible interpretations. Now after reading JD's comment, didn't even know that read only was an option when opening the files up. I use Vault so this might be why I don't see that option.

I'm afraid it is any drawing file that I try to open in Inventor. It will sometimes do it on .prt and .asm files, but it is mainly on .dwgs.

I typically open my files by simply double-clicking on the file. When I do this with .prt or .asm files, it will usually open with the standard Inventor 2020 (not Read-Only). My .dwg files used to work the same way, but they are now only utilizing the Read-Only mode.

The only workaround I have is if I open Inventor 2020 first, and then double-click on the file. If I do that, the files open like they're supposed to. It allows me to do what I need to do and to work on my files like normal, but it's just an extra step that I know could be eliminated.

What happens if you have Inventor open, then select the "Open" icon, and browse to the file, select it and select "OPEN". Does it do it then?

If this works, then this sounds more like technique in opening up the files.

This is the method I use and never have an issue.

If I want to open up my drawings in Inventor 2020, the only way I can do that is to open Inventor 2020 first, and then open the drawing file. This lets me open and edit my drawings, but it just takes longer than simply double-clicking on the file to open it.

This is absolutely one of the most frustrating things that my users and I experience. Sometimes when we try to open a file from Vault, instead of opening the file in Inventor it opens in Inventor Read Only mode. Doesn't seem to by any rhyme or reason for it, and we have to close down Vault and reopen it to make it stop.

Annoying and frustrating are the nicest possible descriptions of this.

Hi Folks,

This could be related to how Inventor as an application is registered to Windows. It is possible some processes overrode the registration. Please try the following and see if it works better.

Go to command prompt and execute the command.

"C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Inventor 2020\Bin\Inventor.exe /install"

For my place of business, it happens randomly throughout the day on any given file. There appears to be no rhyme or reason for it. We will close and reopen Inventor and Vault, and it will just randomly happen again. And it is truly random.

To clarify: this randomly happens to us only when we open files thru Vault, not thru Inventor.

You have to include the quotes before and after, then it will recognize the file path.

It's very frustrating that I can't kill the Read Only default and set it back to the full edit application. I usually have multiple Inventor windows open that I have to shut down and start over. Very annoying and time consuming. This is a major bug for Vault 2020 'View in Window'. OUCH!
