In Inventor, and in real life, you need to cut back both of the rounded edges where the two pipes of equal diameter meet, in order to do a filet weld all around the joint. If you do not trim it back, then it is not a filet weld all around (see the untrimmed joint below). In real life, the weld can be done because it is a combination of a filet and full-pen weld bead - it is not a filet weld all around. If you want to do a filet weld, trim the pipe end back as shown in the screens shots, then do two separate welds. The alternative is to do a cosmetic weld, and make the weld callout whatever you want it to be.

This joint is not trimmed back - the pipes are the same diameter, and one pipe is "notched" to the cylindrical surface of the other pipe.

This joint is trimmed back. It's shown from a different angle, but the point should be clear:

The detail for the trimmed pipe looks something like this (in this case it's a 1 1/2" SCH40 pipe):

I am also having similar issue when trying to weld 2 pipes with same diameter.

Inventor does not allow to weld appropriately all around.

I created a gap between 2 pipes and used groove welding, but I could not use end fillet, that is a bit disappointing.

Thank you Jeffrey,

Sorry for the attachment mistake, I have recreated assembly as an "ipt" (single component) and attached it at below."

Please find it at below. There are 4 pipes joints, but I only have welding issue in one of them, the one that has same diameter as the main pipe (long and short pipe joint).

As mentioned above, I made joint hole slightly bigger for grove welding in between 2 pipes, and it works for the grove welding. But then I need to add fillet welding all around the corners of these 2 pipes, but it does not work, I think this is happening because they are having the same diameter. But, in reality you could weld them together very well.

Thank you for the help in advance

Hi Jeffrey,

I was finally able to create a reasonable weld all around the pipes, thanks for the help.

But, now I am facing to another problem.

When I try to open NASTRAN within Inventor, it is unfortunately crashing inventor by showing an error message.

See error message and assembly screen shot at below. I would appreciate if you have any suggestion or solution for that, I don't know what causes that.

Thank you.

Hi John,

Thanks for the update.

I think it is 2020 version of NASRAN, I never tried 2017 version (see relative screen shot at below).

I think the crash problem is happening because of assembly or capacity of the system. NASTRAN work very well when I open a single component and analyse it !! Even I tried 2 pipe welding assembly it did mage to open the file and meshed it and my computer is also fine. But somehow, when I tried to open multi components welding assembly (10 pipe components, 9 welding points) then it fails and crash the inventor. This is the point that I do not understand what is causing this failure??
