Inventor frame generator not updating with sketch

Hi,

I have a sketch that is driving my frame. When I change the sketch the frame does not update.

I am using Inventor 2021.

Can someone please diagnose whats the problem with my file?

Under the manage tab, click "rebuild all". After I did that, your frame updated and then adjusted as expected when I modified your wireframe.

Thanks for the response. It works on the assembly that I uploaded but does not update on my whole assembly model (which I can share unfortunately.). Any ideas on what might be preventing it from updating?

So the one you posted is the sub assembly and it doesn't update correctly in your main assembly but works as expected when opened on it's own?
Have you got any locked positional or view reps in the main assembly?

What happens if you place this sub assembly into a new empty assembly?

I have had this issue before - I haven't fully figured it out yet, but here is what I know (If anybody has found a better solution, I am interested).

Firstly: I believe this happens when you update your controlling sketch and the frame assembly(ies) it drives is not open (having it inserted into another open assembly does not seem to count, the frame assembly itself must be open).

To fix it, I have to open each individual assembly that the sketch governs and use manage --> rebuild all. Or, open all of the frame assemblies and then making some change to the governing sketch will trigger an update.

The assembly I have posted is the main assembly with confidential parts
deleted.
I deleted all components except the frame and sketch and did a pack and go
and that is the file I uploaded. When I open that file on its own it works
as expected (and it was working earlier as well in the main assembly, but
down the line it stopped updating)
No positional reps but I do have one View rep.
I can't move the frame assembly as there are other parts dependent on the
frame (but the frame and sketch are not dependent on any other part).

One thing that I have tried is 'Edit via frame generator'
When I do that for any of the members it still highlights (in blue) the
correct sketch line with which it is associated, but it does not update.
And if I try to select any other line from the sketch file it does not
allow me to select it( I hope this makes sense)

Hi! I believe it is either a bug or a limitation in Level of Detail (LOD). LOD was designed to be a memory management tool for 32-bit Windows (up-to 3GB RAM can be used). When a component is suppressed, the documents are unloaded. The constraint and geometry compute cannot be fulfilled as if the files are fully loaded.

It is better to keep Master LOD active when you are actively editing the files. Only activate the custom LOD when the shape change is done (not during the change).

To hide the unneeded components, you can turn off visibility and save the state as a design view rep.

I got excited to try your solution of activating the Master LOD and
rebuilding the model.
But as usual Inventor crashed! 😉
I'll give it a go again and see how it goes.

Hi! What release of Inventor are you on? When it crashed, did you send the crash report? If yes, please send me an email (johnson.shiue@autodesk.com). I would like to take a look at the report to understand the crash better.

Please make sure all applicable Inventor updates are installed. All critical Windows updates are installed and the graphic driver is updated.

Hi,
I did not send the latest crash report, but suppressing all components in
the LOD and then switching back to the Master LOD fixed the issue.
I never would have guessed the LOD would create this issue. I had to
recreate the whole frame to meet the deadline but this should come in handy
in the future.

Hi Vahid,

I was able to locate the crash report you sent in (CER:221263072). It looks like the assembly or a subassembly is in Transient LOD (~1). This means that a component within subassembly is suppressed in the context of top-level assembly. This kind of LOD is a special kind and the LOD state does not yet exist in the subassembly.

Instead of using LOD, I think you will be better off either using iLogic or using Design View Rep (to hide unneeded components).

Hi. We are also experiencing frame generator no longer updating with the sketch. This began happening after we upgraded from 2019 to 2021.

I have had 2 users report this problem. Both instances there were no new LoDs created. These were small simple frames that after some time, stopped responding to changes to the driving sketch. Rebuild all has not solved any of the issues. Rebuild all was attempted from every assembly level. As a previous poster mentioned, selecting change frame member / edit frame member will show the memeber in the correct location in a transparent blue, yet selecting apply or ok does not place the member in that location.

I dont think this issue is should be marked as having a solution yet.

hope this issue is resolved very soon.... We use Frame generator a lot... and to have a large frame stop responding to the sketch is catastrophic....

I took a look at the crash report and the bucket again. It seems to be crashing in the browse panel. 2021.2 update will be available soon. It may have been addressed there. Please install it and report back your findings.

Hi,

I believe you are mistaking me for a previous poster. I did not submit any crash report. I havnt experienced any crashing (in this scenario). We are experiencing a MASSIVE decrease in performance after upgrading to 2021.

Frames (not all) randomly, stop responding to changes to the sketch. I cannot identify any pattern as to why this happens. The only way it appears we can get frames to respond to the sketches is to select the "Change" command and rotate or move the member then move it back for it to position correctly on every member that was effected. And sometimes that does not effect a length change.

Should i create a new post for this issue? This thread is marked as solved yet none of the suggestions help. As i said previously, we use frame generator a lot. This tool not working is a massive problem. Stating that maybe in the next patch it will work is not the answer i was looking for. For every Frame that stops working properly, design time sky rockets....

Is the frame or driving sketch grounded? I'm not on 2021, but in previous versions if the sketch was grounded and changed the frame may not update.

Hi All, I was facing same trouble. Frame members were not updating after a change in the sketch model. I tried to rebuild it but it did not work at all. Later, I noticed I was using the same assembly with LH and RH representation. So most likely one is stopping the other to rebuild. An easy way is to close all related files and open only the assembly that needs rebuilding and try to rebuild there. It worked for me , maybe it helps to sort out someone else as well 🙂
