Render max in Inventor 2021?

Hi all.

I am using Inventor 2020, but would like to render images in higher resolution than 4000*4000 pixel.
Is that possible in Inventor 2021?

I've checked both 2019 and 2021 and the limit is 4096x4096 in both versions

Same in fusion 360 and the cloud rendering platform (4096 max)

But 3DS Max can go up to 32,768 x 32,768. So, if you were willing to use 3DS, you could render a much higher resolution! (and probably get a nicer looking rendering too).

The other thing you could do is buy an 8K monitor (7,680 by 4,320) and do an interactive ray trace and take a screenshot. 🤔 I think you should do that.

Disclaimer: I just tried a 32768x32768 render of a simple part in 3DS and my 3DS memory usage went up to 77GB and my computer is not happy about it. . .

I find 3DS Max a little hard to use, but renders very impressive images.
If the model contains a lot of parts then i find that adding the right materials take FOREVER.

Starting over with finding materials for an assembly like this would take me a very long time:

SolidAngle provides a somewhat basic material library for Arnold here:

There are some tricks to speed up that process, i'll try to detail it a little here:

When importing your Inventor assembly/part into Max, make sure you have the option to import Inventor materials and assign ID's checked.

When imported, you can then import all the scene materials onto the "Slate Material Editor"

Once that is done, if you right-click on an imported material you have the option to "change material/map type"

You get a list where you can select other materials, so if you've set up a material library then you can select any other pre-made materials. (like the one i linked, or ones you've made yourself)

It probably still needs some tweaking after that, but i hope this makes it a bit more interesting to try Max. 😉

Arnold can work with the imported Inventor materials, you might have to enable some options to do so.
From my experience though, they don't look as good as Arnold's own materials so it's probably worth changing them.
(i always do, but i like tinkering with the textures and love the control the Arnold materials give me)
