Hi

Total noob here with inventor.

If I draw a simple electrical cabinet model in autocad and want to edit it later, all i have to do is slice it up and presspull , combine etc.

I drew one yesterday in inventor and looks fine. What happens when i want to edit it in any way, height/width etc? Not sure what is correct way to go about it as first attempt it wouldnt let me change any dimensions.

Thanks for any help

Tell us what version of Inventor you're using, and attach your file(s) here for forum experts to take a look. Also, when participating in the forum, be sure to distinguish between modeling and drawing. Modeling is a 3D task, drawing is a 2D task. In Inventor, you create models (.ipt & .iam) and drawings (.idw or .dwg) separately.

Typically, you would create the model with the possible variations in mind. If properly modeled, it could be as simple as popping up a form to fill in the height, width and depth, and done.

Go through IV tutorial.

IV is completely different then AutoCAD.

In AC you "edit" the entity to change dimension.

In IV you "edit" the dimension and the entity change.

In AC you cut a hole and fill it up to remove it.

In IV you suppress or delete the "hole".

I switch to IV R1 from AutoCAD/MDT R14.

@Frederick_Law wrote:

1. IV is completely different then AutoCAD.

2. In AC you "edit" the entity to change dimension.

4. In AC you cut a hole and fill it up to remove it.

1. They are significantly similar - geometry editing tools.

2. AutoCAD has had parametric dimensions for years (very very few know how to use them - but the tools are there).

4. In AutoCAD use SolidEdit>Delete Face to remove a hole, same as Inventor.

There is actually considerable similarity between the two geometry editors (AutoCAD and Inventor) but few get past the differences to clearly see the similarities.

Having said that, I would pay for Inventor out of my own pocket before I would go back to using AutoCAD, so the differences do have significance to me.
