Placing initial view on idw - auto preview generation.

Over the past few Inventor releases, I have noticed that when I chose "Base View" to place my initial view on my idw, Inventor assumes that I want to place a view of the last file (ipt or iam) that I currently have open. If I have open a small ipt, this is no problem, but I have a large iam open, then I have to wait for the view to be generated. I know they have worked on shrinking down the time it takes to generate this preview, but this can be a considerable amount of wa$ted time.

A few releases ago (sorry dont remember which one) they added a feature so that Inventor would not "assume" I wanted to place the view of the active document and then I did not have to wait for the preview to generate. This was greate. For some reason, we have moved away from this, and now I have to wait for the preview again.

Is there a way to get the preview turned off?

I don't know of a way to get the preview turned off, but a different workflow might be useful. Instead of starting a new drawing file and then Place Base View, start in the model file, position the model the way you want it in the drawing, then right click on the model name in the browser and select Create Drawing View.

From here, Inventor lets you select the drawing template you want to use, and then you're in your new drawing with the Place Base View command active with the model and view that you chose.

How are you doing? Yes, there is a way to simplify the preview. Go to Tools -> App Options -> Drawing -> look near the bottom -> View Preview Display -> set it to Bounding Box.

That helps, but what I remember is that after I picked "Base View", if I did not move my mouse over the drawing area, the preview would not start being generating.

You are absolutely right. In the past we delayed the rendering of the preview until the mouse was moved away from the dialog. Not many people knew that. So, good catch!

Starting 2018/2019 we changed the way the view preview and final view were being computed to make it faster as well as remove redundant calls to make the actual view. This should be faster as you start placing multiple views of the same model.

Because we changed how the preview rendering worked, we had to compute the view right away as soon as the dialog was up and populated, which changed the behavior from delayed rendering to immediate. We did wrestle with this fact of delaying it or not starting any view computes when there were multiple documents open but then it would require users to do multiple clicks to get the view started....+ in the we decided to just leave it alone.

So, like @johnsonshiue suggested, you can change the preview to a bounding box to avoid the penalty or activate the model document you are about to document before launching the view dialog.
