Link Sheet Metal Styles in Derived parts BUG?

Hey all,

I use derive all the time to create parts from other parts. Working on a new project here and I leave the "link sheet metal styles" option Unchecked because I normally use "tear" for the corners but sometimes I have to use "square" for certain parts. SO...

The problem is, the parts are syncing to the parent part initially even with the box unchecked. If I check it, update, then come back in and uncheck it, then it behaves properly (so far as I can tell at the moment).

Has anyone heard of this?

Hi! Many thanks for sharing the files! I must have not followed the steps correctly. I am not seeing the behavior (corner relief type becomes synced). Could you elaborate the exact steps leading to the behavior?

Try opening -100 and Part6 (attached here). In -100, toggle the sheet metal rule bend relief shape to "square, round, or tear", then save. Go to Part6 and see if it updates the bend reliefs . It does on mine and it shouldn't. Just to clarify, changing the bend relief in the parent part changes it in the child even with the check box (link sheet metal styles) unchecked.

Hi Chris,

Many thanks for sharing the files! I took a look at the workflow. I am seeing the behavior. However, the "Link Sheet Metal Rules" option is indeed checked in the Derive feature in Part6. If I uncheck it, the change in style in -100.ipt does not propagate to Part6.

Could you double-check?

Thank you for your help. When I open Part6, the "link sheet metal styles" option is not checked and if I change -100, it does change Part6...Maybe I'll do a video showing part creation from scratch.

Hi Chris,

Many thanks for sharing the video! I see the behavior now. Yes, it is a bug. I think I know why I did not see it. Somehow the default sheet metal style was active. As a result, change in .1875 was not taken. The behavior is definitely wrong. I will work with the project team to understand the behavior better and see what we can do.

I seem to have found a workaround.

Within the child component, edit the Derive Part options

Enable the Link sheet metal styles
Click OK button
Save the second file
edit the Derive Part options
Disable the Link sheet metal styles
Click OK and Save the file

Ensure desired thickness is correct
Change first file and update its children.

Thickness parameter does not update

Hi! Just a quick update on this issue, the defect seems to have been fixed on 2022. However, the issue remains there in 2021 and earlier. We will need to find out what exact fix it was and porting it back to prior releases. However, the process may take some time.

Hi Johnson,

I am seeing weird behavior with the "link sheet-metal styles" in 2022 still. I am unsure if that's how it should work.

If you derive a sheet-metal part it continually wants to update the sheet metal rule in the styles after every change to the parent even when there have been no changes made to that style, even if that style is not even being used.

From a bit of searching and seeing you previously answer questions about this feature, it seems the wording is a bit ambiguous and it's not really a tool to derive styles.

This change of styles causes issues and I can't seem to understand what is forcing it to want updates?

Any ideas?

If I understood how Sheet Metal Styles Derive works, it was more like "copy over" than update. When there is a change in the source style, it will be copied over to the derive. The only way to untangle this relationship is to create a new style in the derive sheet metal part and assign it to the sheet metal body. Otherwise, the source style will keep driving the derived style, and driving the derived part.

There is no change in the style happening which is why it doesn't make sense for it to require an update?

Creating a new style in the derived part will not help if the "Link Sheet Metal Styles" is checked as it will keep reverting with any change to the parent part.

It seems like having "Link Sheet Metal Styles" checked just doesn't work as expected. What in the Sheet Metal Rule data changes each time to require it to want to sync?
