Naviworks to Inventor

Hi,

I opened a Navisworks file (.nwd) in Autodesk Navisworks Manage 2021. I'd like to open and edit the file in Autodesk Inventor Professional 2021. How can I do this? I followed a couple tutorials on Youtube and Autodesk forum but none have yielded the desired result. Your help is appreciated. Thank you.

navisworks has limited export capabilites

you can export to FBX but this would require going through another software like 3ds max & then exporting out from there to a format Inventor can open

Yes, I exported the file from Navisworks using the FBX file format. I have 3DS Max and am able to open the exported file in this environment. However, I am not having success with exporting the file from 3DS Max and opening the result in Inventor.

we went through a painstaking task of trying to do this when we working on the Hudson Yards Vessel openings. The manufacturer would only provide us a section in Navisworks which, to be honest, was almost impossible to work with. Here is what we did-

exported the model from Navisworks as FBX

imported FBX into Rhino

Created faces to each face we needed using the geom from the imported file

exported from Rhino as a surface model

imported the Rhino model into Inventor as surfaces

applied a thicken to each face we needed

even with the work, the geom comes with tones of rogue lines and split faces. its a difficult timely process
