First of all thank you very much for the prompt replies! My main ''problem'' is to create an idw drawing with specific line thicknesses and a simple BOM list which recieves data (iproperties) from each part of the assembly. Also I would like to add ballons and welding symbols. I think my question has been answered.

One more, why a step file doesn't maintain the constrains of the original assembly?

Hello everybody!

I have a complicated assembly as .stp file. I want to know (in order not to waste time) if I can create an .idw drawing with a complet BOM list from that as I can from an .asm file.

Thank you!!

The answer is very likely NO depending on how the step file was created and your definition/expectations of a complete bom list..

The step file won't retain as much information as a native cad file would.

Hi! I will say it depends. STEP actually does carry some component properties and meta data. But, like Brian mentioned, it is not going to be as extensive as the original CAD data.

You can create associative drawing views of the components. Add dimensions and annotations (no model dimensions to retrieve). You can create PartsLists and Balloons.

We do have customers leveraging this particular workflow exclusively. Please feel free to share an example here. Forum experts can help take a look and provide further guidance.

Many thanks!

Hi! I think what you want to do can be done in Inventor. We have quite a few users leveraging the exact workflows (import/link STEP file to Inventor and create associative drawing views and annotation).

STEP was originally driven by automotive industry almost 30 years ago. It was meant for automakers and their suppliers to exchange geometric data without disclosing design detail. The geometry is static and the position is static. So, constraints are not included.

Many thanks!
