Cannot rip or cut corner seams in sheet metal part

Running into a problem with this particular part. When I convert it to a sheet metal part for some reason it won't let me rip or add corner seams. Any suggestions on where I am going wrong?

The geometry does not appear to have been created properly.

Can you Attach the original file here with the sketches/features?

Just out of curiosity - how do you plan to make that part using a brake press?

I don't.

I will flange the top & bottom pieces and rivet the sides on. I use Inventor (or Fusion 360) to help make the design & then I print out a template and assemble it.

This is terribly impractical for most parts but is a decent solution when you have a more complicated problem you are trying to solve.

I am still learning Inventor and so I get hung up on odd issues.

You step brake the curved sides and place the flanges on the flat pieces. You have facets in real life but will work.

Hi! On top of what experts already mentioned, Inventor sheet metal bend has to be cylindrical (or torus in a roll). This part cannot be made by sheet metal features. You can use Fillet to round off the sharp edges. Then make a cut in the middle so that it can be flattened by using Unwrap command.

But then the manufactured item will be made out of four pieces, will it not?

In such a case - here is a quick model in IV2020 for you to have a look at.

It is made for welding together, not riveting together. If I wanted to use rivets - I would probably introduce separate pieces of angle as joining parts. But if you insist on tubs being part of corresponding parts - some more work is needed to model them.

Besides what everybody else said, you can make separate surfaces for the sides that don't get flanged and then thicken them. Then you can extrude the other two parts using the sheetmetal press-brake command so the segments can be flanged. If you work from the inside of the duct and make all the sides thickened surfaces, then the edges will be coincident along the inside of the duct, so you can corner-to-corner weld if thick enough. Or you can make flange segments offset inward the side thickness per @gmwi, and then spot weld or rivet. Or you can use an Inventor add-on like DuctPro or an AutoCAD add-in (I forget the name, but it's about $800 for a perpetual license).

Yes, if your parts are segmental. But I was working off the information provided initially by Ellen. Namely - the picture of the duct. There is no segments in there. 🙂 Besides - in your example the width of the duct is constant. Only the height is changing. And that's a whole different game indeed.

You are correct. I did not attach a part file because I ASSumed that the screen shot of the "quick & dirty" example was enough to show that it could be done, as asked. I'm sorry for assuming to much, my bad. I could not open the example and there were no dim's to go by.

Usually when there's large radii, we use the roll-forming machine.

I think @IgorMir is right, we'd probably make 4 parts and then weld them along the seams.

That's probably the easiest method on this duct.

Let me try to make one and see what's easiest...

No. I made a solid for the center estimated dim's and then built around it.
