I have a part that a colleague created that seems to want to check in another file (.fres extension) but I can't find any reference to that file in the browser.

Is there another way of finding out what external references a part has with the view to breaking the link?

That is a document used for FEA calculations. Remove the reference by going to the Environments tab, Stress analysis and delete any studies there.
