topic Coil in Assembly in Inventor Forum

Good evening all,

To beat what is hopefully not a dead horse, if I might bring up the age old "how to do I use a coil command in in assembly" question. I did do some searching prior to this and tried few of the methods outlined including creating a part within the assembly, but it does not create the desired result.

Essentially what I am trying to achieve would be to create a very a extensive (for us) assembly comprising of multiple parts, sub assemblies and content center bits and pieces. After all the preparation, welds and machining, I need to cut a coil into the OD of a central tube. Cant seem to get there and this is the last step.

Any help would be appreciated!

Have a read of this recent post: Re: ASSY SPIRAL CUT OR OTHER IDEA - Autodesk Community - Inventor

Almost identical to what your asking...

Outside of 2022 it can be done with an iAssembly - switch out the part at the last step with a pre-machined one. I'm not sure how this would work with weldments because I stopped using them about 10 years ago. In 2022 there should be a model states solution...

@gcoombridge Thank you! After a bit of reading and watching the video posted in the other feed, a little experimenting, and I got it to work nearly perfect.

Like some of the other comments, I also use a custom ilogic for calculating weight, so I ran that before used the model states to make sure the base material pre-cut was proper. On my BOM and part drawings it shows the model state of the part pre-weld. In the model state I created, I added the grooving I needed. Made sure this new state wasnt used for the drawing, went back to my assembly, changed the state and viola! Perfect look!

Thanks so much!

(it would still be nice to have COIL in assembly/machining... just saying) 😉
