I would like to know would you like to try ImageModeler?

The reason I ask is that the reason it no longer exists is that there wasn't much adoption by customers and from my own experiments I never found it good enough considering the time spent (i.e taking multiple photos, import and setup in the program, and tweaking to get acceptable results). Maybe good enough for Google Maps type buildings but not for technical drawings or photo realistic renderings.

My experience was that the best results came from the simpler architecture with flat walls and square shapes, so no Antoni Gaudí work. Also it was very difficult to get good textures as there were always things like trees and vehicles in the way.

My suggestion as an alternative workflow would be some combination of ReCap/Remake and 3ds Max. You could use the ReCap photo to mesh tool to capture the textures. Then in 3ds Max create a simple object to represent the building as use the projection modifier to take the texture from the ReCap mesh an applyit to the Max base object.

Thoughts?

That shipped with Max 2010 and was End-Of-Lifed in 2012. I am not sure if it can be activated, but I'll move this thread to Installation and Licensing to see if they have a better idea.

Hello Ben,

Good to see that somebody looks into it thoroughly.

Sad to hear, that it got so little adoption. I guess it is a tool for a very specific use:

If you have few images of a largely orthogonal spatial configuration.

In our case we have an artistic project about reconstructing spaces with only a small set of photos. The spaces are not accessible any more / have changed, so 3d-reconstruction is not possible.

I rememered the image modeler being the right tool for that.

I guess that would be valid for many historic reconstructions, when only few photos are available.

Hope that clarified our use.

Thanks for looking into it!

Best regards, Peter Stulz

Yes, it is still in demand, but few people know about Image Modeler since it is not available now.

But the Image Modeler has one big plus (which is not related to architecture), it can calibrate photos from different angles, different lighting and even the color of the model. And this is essentially only an available solution for this situation because this cannot be done with the photogrammetry pipeline. An example is the calibration of a photo of cars, they can quite reflective (Photogrammetry does not like this, but Image Modeler can do it), different light, image, model with different colors, you can even calibrate the interior of the car. After that, place modeling locators on all models and export all this with locators and cameras to Maya. Draw curves around locators and put images on the cameras and get an almost perfect 3D blueprint.

In any case, there is no good alternative for this now.

Well, as another example, my old work was done with such a pipeline. The accuracy is very high. In the attached image.

photomodeller (above) seems to have a manual calibration mode just like image modeller.

Did you find any other solutions? I wonder if reality capture would work. You can align photos manually with points. You can also export cameras and images to Blender. Not sure if you can export the points too.
