I am an Engineering Student at Mississippi State University and have been using your student autocad. Yesterday while trying to do my engineering homework on autocad it quit working. I completely removed the autocad programs from my laptop this morning and reinstalled them. I am still getting the same error message when trying to launch the program. Please help. I can not complete my homework without running autocad.

I'm sorry your AutoCAD quit working. I suspect that the issue is really a .Net Framework issue. What is your OS? If Windows 10, you could try resorting to a restore point. Please take a look at the suggestions made by @rkmcswain and @pendean to see if they can get you back up and running.

Hi @Anonymous,

I am sorry that you are still struggling with this issue. The likely cause is a Windows update that occurred recently. This might have caused a .NET error which is preventing the application from running. One option is to try using a Restore point. Here is a link to a third party site that shows how to do this.

Additionally, I will move this thread to Installation and Licensing as this is now an installation issue. My associate @natasha.l is a support specialist in that forum and will look for this post.

@Anonymous

How has the software been installed? Install now? Has the actual software media actually been downloaded to the machine?

Here's what I would recommend...

Perform a clean uninstall per these instructions. Just make sure to adjust settings if you have other Autodesk products already installed/working on your machine.

Download and install per:

1. Clean out your personal temp (%temp%) folder. Make sure you have full admin rights, set Windows UAC to never notify and if possible disable your Anti-Virus/Malware scanning utilities. Also the download should occur over a hard wired connection to the Internet and not over WIFI.

2. Access the Autodesk Virtual Agent and follow the download links to your product.

3. Download all of the parts (some applications only have a single part to download) for your product first. This means save each part to your hard drive. Do not continue until all of the parts have fully downloaded.
4. Navigate to your download folder location and extract (double click) part _001_00X.sfx.exe (or the single file download).
5. In a few seconds the extraction will start and prompt you to extract to C:\Autodesk.
6. Once the extraction is finished, the installation will automatically start.
7. Follow the installation steps for your product. At this point you could cancel the installation or create a deployment.

Good luck and report back on your progress.

One more thing...

Do you have netframe 4.7 installed? Netfrrame 4.7 is causing headaches in the Autodesk Community.

Confirm the "Version" entry in this registry entry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\NET Framework Setup\NDP\v4\Full

If so I would recommend that you review the following articles

John, I don't think it's fair to blame Microsoft entirely. I'm pretty sure that developers such as Autodesk have the opportunity to test their applications with these updates before they are released to the public.

We are dealing with a similar problem that cropped up in the Win10 1703 update. Sure, Microsoft changed something in the update, but isn't it the responsibility of the application developer to ensure that the application runs on the O/S? Not the other way around.

Okay, on to this issue. *Generally* speaking, there is no telephone support available for Autodesk software. There are exceptions, and I don't know all of the details on student accounts. In the meantime, below are some links to the general support options.

Here are the various Autodesk support offerings. You may need to be logged into your Autodesk Account in order to see an accurate list of the options available to you.

If your support options allow you to submit a Support Request, you can do that here.

You may be able to schedule a time for Autodesk Support to call you.

Everyone has the ability to leave Autodesk feedback on their support, or any other subject.

I would look into restoring the O/S to an earlier point in time. Also, have a different user log in to the PC and see if it works under a different user account. Lastly, do you know if the assignments have to be done using "AutoCAD" (proper)?

HI @rkmcswain,

Thanks for the viewpoint. From what I understand, the .Net Framework update breaks things when the pre-release of 4.6.2 is installed. This doesn't just affect just Autodesk products but also those of Adobe and even Microsoft as well as those from other developers. The fix, as suggested, is to remove the .Net Framework 4.7 and then remove 4.6.2. After this is done, then they can be re-installed and the applications behave properly and as designed. This is obviously a difficult process with Windows 10 since the .Net Framework is so tightly embedded in it.

I am also aware that the .Net Framework 4.7.1 is in pre-release and apparently remedies all of the strange behavior that so many applications have been exhibiting. I hope that this update fixes all the problems so many customers have been facing.

Thanks again for your contributions to the Community.

This was not of any help. The suggestions in the article just compounded the problems for my son as it rendered ALL Microsoft office programs unusable. We worked on these issues from 7 AM until 4 pm then at 10 pm started reloading Microsoft programs for his "non engineering homework" also due this week.

I have now reloaded AutoCAD 4x on his computer. The latest reload was this morning with a whole new set of issues. This problem is only getting worse, and now the student has not been able to complete homework assignments for 3 DAYS!

Thank you. Yes he started college at 16 actually! I can not find anyway to get phone support for AutoCAD. MSU ITS just said he must bring the computer in for them to help, but he is home for fall break now. I am about at my wits end trying to help him solve these issues with AutoCAD.

@Anonymous

Just to let you know.. Student/free license do not entitle you to support from Autodesk or that you have very very limited support like the forums. The reason is because your son received the license for free. You can always reach out to the educational support team but most likely they will just re-direct you to the forums.

Yes I completely understand that the student AutoCAD was given free, but in the same breath AutoCAD says they do this to help the student who is learning to be an Engineer. Once an Engineer he will pay those license fees for MANY MANY years as AutoCAD become like second nature to him while in school. I was looking for an option to even buy into some type support. The school has their own ITS dept, but for when he is not on campus he needs support. This has been nothing short of a nightmare.

The first two suggestion links in this thread only compounded the issues.
