inventor 2018 install hangs at language pack

Try to install inventor 2018 (PRDSU_2018_Enu_Win_64bit_dlm) on a windows 10 (up to date) in a domain machine. But it is stuck at Autodesk Inventor 2018 Language Pack. Cannot cancel it either. It simply stays on this for many hours with no progress. Earlier someone else managed to install it to another windows 10 machine. But then only local administrator can start inventor 2018. No other users can. So basically either we cannot install it or it is installed but only one local administrator can start it. Could someone please help with this? What is the problem? Does anyone else have this problem? Why is the installation so hard?

Perform a clean uninstall per these instructions and make sure to use Microsoft Fixit as indicated in that article. Something tells me the language pack is installed and can't be changed. Microsoft Fixit should show it in its list. Also just make sure to adjust settings if you have other Autodesk products already installed/working on your machine.

Thank you Mark for the message. I tried the Microsoft tool to clean up install and/or uninstall residues.

Deleted all the files in %temp% folders. Uninstall all the related autodesk installs from programs and features in control panel.

Delete autodesk folders from c:\program files, c:\program files (x86).

Delete autodesk folder from public document folder and %localappdata% folder.

Delete registry folder

Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\autodesk,

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\autodesk,

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Autodesk

Remove all the users profiles except for the domain admin user that is to be used to install autodesk.

The system is pretty clean after all these steps. But when I try to install inventor 2018, it is stuck at Autodesk Inventor 2018 Language Pack as before at step 52 out of 64.

I am totally stuck now. Is there anything else to try to get inventor 2018 installed at all?

Cancel the installation and zip up all of the installation log files that were created today and the time you started the installation. Post the host of installation files here so they can be reviewed.

As it is usually the case, cancel button does not work in this case. So I have to kill the install from task manager. Zip all the files from %temp% and attach it to this reply. Please check to see what went wrong with this install. Let me know if any other info is needed.

Your zip file does not contain a msi log file from the inventor language pack.

It is possible, that it was cached and so not yet written to your hard disk.

Can you activate the global MSI logging through the registry (voicewarmupx) and upload the *.log files to the forum ?

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer

Reg_SZ: Logging
Value: voicewarmupx!

for more information search at microsoft for "voicewarmupx!"

Upload the files from the base installation (are in the %temp% folder of the user which executes the process).

Hello George,

okay, after a look to the started installation log of the inventor language pack (en-us) it is clear that the last thing the msi tries is the "Custom Action":

RegApprentice

This "Custom Action" tries the following:

'C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Inventor 2018\Bin\bin32\ApprenticeRegSvr.exe /install /silent /32BitRegistrationOn64BitOS'

tried on: 2017-10-20, 13:43:24

It is difficult to say why the process get stuck.

If I was in your place I would remove this "Custom Action" from the language pack installation that I can install (just for test purpose).

And then try to manually register the apprentice server with process monitor in the background to check at what point the process get stuck.

Thank you for the message. However this is an autodesk package. I do not really know how to modify that and try something different like you say here. If there is an easy way to do that, please help.

Hi George,

just a few questions:

Do you install interactive with the setup.exe or silent with a deployment ?
With which user do you install (local Administrator or member of the admin group, etc.) ?
Which Windows 10 version do you have ? Build ?
Which Inventor version do you install 2018 with patch 2018.1 ?
Is Inventor View 2018 also installed ?

Right now I am trying it on windows 10 version 1709 build 16299.19. Earlier I tried on windows 10 version 1703 build 15063.674 with the same result.

I only install inventor 2018 with setup. So it is interactive. As for the inventor version, I would say it is 2018 only. We do not have any view installed. In fact, there is not any other autodesk product installed before the inventor 2018 install.

For the most part, I try to install with domain admin which is the account we usually use to install software. If local administrator is any better, I can try that too.

I'm having the exact same problem right now.

I have tried both from deployment and from the setup in the installation media folder. Both freezez at the same point (Language pack).

When the setup is trying/installing and you try to save a file och just browse to the network folder where the media is placed you will have to wait for many minutes before explorer gets responsive. Seems like the setup is generating a lot of network traffic (?).

Just tried the Inventor 2018 installation on a Windows 10 1709 system and it worked as expected.

I also tested with plain windows 10. It works too. So it is clear that autodesk is conflicting with some of the other programs that we have. Now I am not exactly sure which setup.ini that you are talking about. But here is the one in the root folder where the setup.exe is.

For some reason I have to rename setup.ini to setup.txt in order to attach it here.

Using virtual machine and with trial and error, we conclude that the problem with inventor 2018 installation is the conflict between inventor 2018 and ODB++ Viewer 64 bit from Mentor Graphics. If we do not install that, then inventor 2018 installs and starts properly. If we install it, then inventor 2018 cannot be installed at all.

Just want to make a follow up on this matter:

In my case it turned out that the local network was the culprit.

We did a simple test by copying the whole folder containing the installation files for inventor 2018 from the server to a client PC. At several times the network traffic dropped from 100Mbit/s down to 100Kbit/s and stayed on this slow rate for approximately 4 minutes before going back to 100Mbit/s again.

Also, the copying of files seemed to stop at a certain dll file which I cannot remember the name of.

Solution:

Place the installation files on another media (another client, USB-drive etc.)

What we know is that if you start with a brand new computer with only OS installed, then the auto desk package installs. Start from there, you can begin installing other applications one at a time to check out which other application conflicts with the auto desk install. Using virtual machines, with snap shot we can avoid starting from scratch each time if anything goes wrong to save time and effort. On the other hand, I have to say that auto desk guys could have done more this way to save us users from doing this.
