Dear Autodesk,
I am a full time student from ite central in Singapore and am currently using a student version of Maya 2016.5, when I finish my studies I will get the commercial license for maya. Can I use the asset's I have created under the student version for commercial purposes after getting the commercial license or must I recreate everything from scratch as I have already started to model quite a bit of items I may want to use in the future and I don't want to redo everything again.

Unfortunately, you'll have to recreate them ....

another ticket about this:

Hello @Anonymous,

In this case, when moving from a student license to a commercial license, you can change the license type without having to re-install. You can also save a file, so that it is saved in a commercial version (without a watermark this security measure was removed).

Although, keep in mind when you have source files like xrefs, blocks, templates etc. that could have a portion of the file having been created in a student version you will have to save all the files referenced to the commercial version to make it compliant.

In some cases, its easiest to re-create all the content from the student file to a commercial file version.

So it's up to you how you choose to go about it. Let us know if you have any questions.

Hi Benjamin, once you've switched to a commercial version of Maya and you open the files you created with the student License, you will still be prompted with the message: 'The file being saved was created by a Student Version of Maya intended for personal learning only. If you save the file, this message will always appear whenever the file is opened.'

This message is obviously quite annoying, especially when working with reference files. You can remove the watermark/message prompt by saving your files in mayaAscii-format and then opening the file in a text editor like WordPad. Remove the line that says 'fileInfo "license" "student";' and save. When you re-open the file in Maya, you should be good to go. These actions can also be automated with a script, which saves time.

Hope this helps.

-Max
