How to transfer 3DS Max license to another computer.

Hello all,

I was hoping someone can point me in the right direction on this. I have a system at work currently licensed and running 3ds max. My company just purchased a new computer for me to work from home a few days a week.

My question is what is the process to transfer the license from my current work machine to my new home machine when I need to work from home.

What type of license do you have? Individual Desktop/rental model? Legacy perpetual stand-alone? Network?

So that means perpetual? With perpetual license you're allowed to install and activate on 2 machines as long as they are not being used as the same time. No need to transfer license back n forth.

Hello @Anonymous,

You can uninstall on the original computer if you no longer need it on that device. Then you can install the application on the new device.

Conduct a Clean Uninstall on the original computer & use the MSfixitTool to complete it
On the new computer, reboot the computer, make sure apps are not auto running in the background
Log in as Administrator (check your permissions, full control) or create a new profile
Make sure you have a strong connection & good internet speed
Clean out the TEMP folder. To open the TEMP folder, type %TEMP% in the address bar of Windows Start Menu and hit Enter (Windows)
Temporarily disable security settings like Antivirus, Firewall & UAC on your Windows operating system
Use the Browser Download Method in your Autodesk Account or via the AVA | Autodesk Virtual Agent (download all the parts)

Hi Natasha,

I have a similar question, My office is running building design suite 2017 and I recently began to use 3Ds max 2017 on both our office PC and my personal laptop at home in non concurrent mode. However, I realized my desktop at home is a far better machine for me to work on and would like to disable the license on my laptop and activate it on my home desktop without compromising my office PC license.

The license is commercial.

Could I simply uninstall it off my laptop and install the product on my desktop using the serial and product key?

PS. I'm very new to this licensing process.

I'm having a similar problem. I have 3dsMax 2010 and installed it on Windows 10. Then, I found out that Windows 10 updates can cause unwanted Re-Activation. Ten days from now, that would have failed!

I was able to move my copy of Maya 2010 using the License Transfer Utility, but for some reason I didn't have one for Max. So, I found this forum and uninstalled Max. It didn't release the License and I can't activate my other install! I noticed that you mentioned Fix It, but it's not finding the Max install (guess it was complete?) and I don't know the Product Key.

Uninstalling doesn't release any license aspect... Fixit is only used when you can't fully uninstall it.

I have both Max and Maya. I have a Win 10 machine and a Win 7 machine and I am trying to transfer the working licenses from the former to the latter. I had no trouble doing this with Maya using its License Transfer Utility. For some reason, Max did not have the LTU installed, so I uninstalled Max hoping that the license would be released.

But I still cannot activate Max on the Win 7 machine because it says I have too many.

The Product Key I was referring to is the long number Fix It asks for when it can't find the thing you're trying to uninstall, but this is probably irrelevant now.

One idea is to reinstall Max on the Win 10 computer. Since that was the hardware it was tied to, perhaps the activation will work? And with a reinstall, perhaps I'll get the LTU back?

I don't know what else to try.

The "Too many activations" warning for the old style, perpetual standalone licenses doesn't refer to number of concurrent installs. It's the number of automated activations available - you've exceeded the normal value. You'll need to put in a service request to get a manual activation code for the new computer. Once that's activated and running, just uninstall on the old computer.

I don't understand how the solution to this could possibly be to UNINSTALL the software ????????????

Surely the solution is to utility the License Transfer Utility - which is what I have done.

However...... as in typical Autodesk fashion, nothing is easy nor works flawlessly.....

I've transferred by licence successfully, but now my recipient new machine has the old machine's Windows 10 Desktop Wallpaper !!!

How, Autodesk, do you manage it !!??

I have a similar issue. I have a standalone license for Max 2015 - but it is already installed in my 2 computers. I need to remove it from one of those computers, and install it in a new computer. How do I make sure I can install it in the new computer without having License problems? Is there a final way to completely deactivate or de-license my Max install from my previous computer?
