topic Install silently, quickly fails: Inventor Pro 2019 on Win10 (v 1803 & .NET 4.72) in Installation & Licensing Forum

I just installed a full-retail version of 64-bit Win10 Pro (v 1803) on my workstation (certified hardware). This was not an upgrade from a previous version, but used a Microsoft-supplied ISO file and directly installs 1803, so it comes complete with .Net 4.72. It's a brand-new install, without any other "junk" or "crud" confusing the situation.

I've also downloaded a trial version of Inventor Pro 2019; not able to find a more fine-grained commit / version #, but I downloaded it yesterday from https://manage.autodesk.com/ so surely it's the most recent one. In trying to install it, I first successfully download all three .sfx.exe files (via browser download manager), as I know that's a problem that other folks have run into. I then self-extracted them into a temp directory (C:\Autodesk) and verified that directory size is approx. 12.4 GB, as expected. All looks good, so far. I launch the associated Setup.exe file, and nothing happens at all. No error message, no output, nothing. Don't have Visual Studio, or I'd try to attach a debugger to the executable upon launch.

I've verified that I have .Net 4.7 installed (which is pretty much a given with the 1803 version of Win10). Otherwise, I looked throughout the forums and read all install docs, but can't seem to figure this out. A lot of the forum posts and documentation appear to address issues with earlier versions of Autodesk products or earlier releases of Win10. Indeed, they mention all kinds of problems *WITH* .Net 4.7, but I think those all predate Inventor 2019 (and were likely fixed by it). Unfortunately, those posts were not updated. According to system requirements for Inventor 2019, it *REQUIRES* .Net 4.7.

I'm really surprised that it's such a struggle at the very first step. This doesn't bode well for the AD dev process having sophisticated regression-testing as part of release management.

How can it fail on a brand-new (supported) Win10 install, with almost no variables? (Ie, this should be the most heavily tested configuration, one would think...)

Thoughts and suggestions very much appreciated, from both the community and/or the AD mods.

Hi,

Thanks for your help, and quick reply.

However, this strikes me as backwards, where I feel like I'm debugging AD software rather than deploying or trialing it.

Is there not a clear-cut install guide for your most current release of a flagship product, installed on a brand-new Win10 install? Put a different way, if an AD release manager wants to install Inventor Pro 2019 on brand-new Win10 1803 --- for their own use --- what are the steps that (s)he has to do so that it works?

Shouldn't these then be written down and shared, so that we can follow them, rather than having us flail around and see what works, and then report back... Sure, that's necessary for the corner cases, when there are unexpected interactions from various software or unusual libraries, but the whole point of me doing this on a virgin install is so that I can avoid those, and then just follow the step-by-step instructions for a default install. If there are no step-by-step instructions, then it's just madness, no?

That being said, I'll confirm that I've tried your suggestions, but I still maintain that this is not the proper way to distribute software.

#1 & #2 above don't solve issue:

(1) Confirmed I was already installing it in context of administrator. Also, did "Run as Administrator" to try that as well.

 (2) Disabled anti-virus, firewall, and UAC. No change. I have no third-party apps installed here --- it's all just standard MS Win10 AV & FW, and I disabled them (as well as UAC). Same errors.

Still exploring event viewer, but nothing obvious so far. Just to clarify --- I'm not doing any form of network install. This is all local install from AD's self-extracting archive (extracted just fine, just can't get Setup.exe to do anything).

Am I the only one running into these issues? This is latest AD Inventor going onto a virgin install of latest Win10. How can others not be hitting same problem?

Can you please confirm the precise requirements wrt .NET framework for Inventor 2019?

Thanks.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for joining in (especially as a fellow member of the community).

Would be happy to share my log files, but none are being generated. I'm pretty sure I'm looking in the right place, having followed the directions at the link you provide, allowing windows explorer to resolve the %TEMP% alias to take me to the temp directory in my local AppData. There are a bunch of other interesting files in there, but no log files associated with this install. Indeed, if I try to install it again, I get no additional files in that directory location.

This would seem to suggest that the setup is failing very early in the process, as I alluded to in my initial post (ie, fails "silently" and "immediately"). This is also probably why I haven't (yet) found anything posted to the Event Viewer...

Where else should I look, please?

Thanks for your advice.

Hello @Anonymous,

When you type %temp% in the search you can not locate a temporary folder?

I recommend reaching out to your IT department or Microsoft this seems to be a bigger issue not associated with Autodesk software.

You can try to repair the system, maybe the installation of Windows 10 was interrupted causing these issues.
