The instructions are noted here:

http://help.autodesk.com/view/INSTALL_LICENSE/2015/ENU/?guid=GUID-E7E054E1-0E32-4B3C-88F9-BF820EB45BE5

You need to use rpm and adlmreg commands to properly license it.

Also confirm that there is a /var/flexlm/maya2015.lic file. The contents should be:

SERVER your-servernmane-or-servername-ip-address 0

USE_SERVER

If you are tyring to use the render nodes, you need to have a network version of Maya.

We're setting up a small Linux-based render farm with Maya 2015 and Mental Ray. We've already used Maya and Mental Ray for years under Windows. We're well experienced running Linux, but not running these applications under it. The installation seems to go normally. Maya-only renders run normally. Renders that also involve Mental Ray fail with the dreaded:

    maya: License was not obtained

    License method:
    environment variable MAYA_LICENSE_METHOD='network'
    Product choice:
    environment variable MAYA_LICENSE='unlimited'
    License file override:
environment variable MAYA_ALT_EN is not set

Our render nodes are headless systems running CentOS 6.2, installed with the -nogui option. They have no graphical interfaces installed, although I did install the necessary libraries to support rendering. My installation has been hampered by a lack of current installation instructions. I keep finding documents dating to 2009 and such, and the solution for this problem I've found similarly don't match my environment.

Our Windows nodes use the same license server as the Linux environments, and they render Maya and Mental Ray fine. So we know that the license server works properly. As said above, Maya-only renders also work fine under Linux, so clearly the Linux nodes can connect to the license server properly.

Can anyone provide me with any of the following:

1) Current instructions for installing Maya 2015 and Mental Ray in a non-graphical Linux environment.

2) Information on diagnosing Maya+Mental Ray license issues

3) Any other advise

Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide

David, Thank you so much. Setting up the Maya license properly made the Mental Ray license failure go away. I have been looking high and low for that document. I don't know what Autodesk can do to make that more visible to the search engines, but I wouldn't have found it without your help.
