There is no version of Backburner that is IPv6. I also don't agree with disabling IPv6.

What you should do is use Microsoft's "Prefer IPv4 over IPv6" Fix-it which you can find here (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2533454)

This has to be done on all computers on the render farm.

Try it out and tell me if that works.

Just pushed out this setting over GPO. Seems to work in the test environment.

Incase others need to do this, here's How:

Create new GPO object

Drill into Computer Config > Preferences > Windows Settings > Registry

Create a new registry item with:
- Action: Update
- Hive: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
- Key Path: SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\TCPIP6\Parameters
- Value Name: DisabledComponents
- Value Type: REG_DWORD
- Value Data: 20 (Base: Hex)

Link GPO in OUs where your render nodes & workstations reside.

That's basically it.

Strongly recommend against disabling IPv6. Lots of things in windows rely on having the loopback interface working properly and just killing IPv6 altogether may cause all sorts of interesting problems a few months down the line.

Hi Ben,

I am using 3dsmax 2017 trial on 2 of my pc and trying out network render for them.

My OS is Windows 7.

I tried Microsoft's "Prefer IPv4 over IPv6" Fix-it as you mentioned, it fixes the network render on the local machine but it does not link them up in the network render as I can only see 1 PC in my Backburner Manager.

On the PC that does not appear in the Manager, its server window is still showing error messages of "Error receiving information: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host. (0x2746) ."

Hope you can advise on this.

Best Regards,

Sunny

Did you restart? You must restart to apply the "fix it".

To verify it's worked, check the registry settings in my post above and make sure the values exist as described.

If that doesn't work, close all instances of 3ds max / backburner, then delete the "Backburner" folder from %AppData%\..\Local which will reset all preferences.

Hi,

Those 4 steps are for people who have active directory domains with hundreds of render nodes... I'm guessing you don't.

I'm not sure what to try now... asides from disabling IPv6 completely just for testing.

Try this on all 3 of your computers:

Make sure backburner and all other apps are closed.

Right click on the network icon on the bottom right of your screen near the time and open the Network & Sharing Center

Under "View your active networks" click on your network adapter (Normally this is called "Local Area Connection" or similar.

Click on "Properties"

Scroll down in the middle of this window and untick the box next to "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)

Click "OK" then "Close"

Restart the computer

Try that and see if it connects.

Disabling IPv6 is not a good long term fix but we will try it here as a diagnostic step.

No, it is not a router setting. All the traffic on your local LAN from computer to computer goes direct to each other, has nothing to do with the router.

Can you verify you can ping both ways from the node to the bb server and vice versa?
