An incompatible version of the Autodesk license manager is installed on the server

This message was presented to me when running AutoCAD, Revit etc. after installing the latest client license manager 12.2.0.17. Which is weird, since we already have the most recent NLM version installed on the license server.

Thing is, there's no easy way to roll back the client license manager - or is there?

It's not listed in Windows 'Add/Remove programs'. Trying to install an older version doesn't seem to work. Luckily, there's a trick. When you look in folder "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Autodesk Shared\AdskLicensing" you'll see all installed versions of the license manager. And there's one folder called Current. That's a hardlink to the most recently installed version. So if the latest version fails, just rename 'Current' and create a new link:

<LI-CODE lang="general">mklink /J "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Autodesk Shared\AdskLicensing\Current" "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Autodesk Shared\AdskLicensing\<working version>"</LI-CODE>

After creating the link, you'll need to reboot Windows so it picks up the correct exe file for the license service. Problem solved.

I received the same error after updating the license manager, but after updating the network license manager to version 11.18.0.0 everything works again without any errors.

The error of the month! Error 0.0.0 is happening all over the place and our tech support helpdesk have received a ton of calls about it. Thanks to colleague @cdodge for figuring this one out.

The problem: Workstation displays Error 0.0.0 and can't acquire a (network) license after Autodesk licensing 12.2 is installed AND the Network license server is running version 11.16 (or partial 11.18 - will explain this below).

The RIGHT solution:

Keep 12.2 installed on workstation. The fix is only required for the server:

1. Note the path to the existing installation path of NLM's LMGRD.exe

2. Stop Service in the START/STOP/REREAD tab

3. In the Task manager, make sure LMGRD.exe or ADSKFLEX.exe are not still running

4. Uninstall 11.16

5. Again: In the Task manager, make sure LMGRD.exe or ADSKFLEX.exe are not still running

6. Install 11.18 onto the SAME old location - THIS IS IMPORTANT. Do not change the path

7. Start Service in the START/STOP/REREAD tab and you should be all set.

IMPORTANT Note: a partial install of 11.18 occurs when LMGRD.exe or ADSKFLEX.exe from 11.16 were left running after uninstalling, and 11.18 install was unable to overwrite them. Yes, this is very common because uninstalling NLM is tricky.

The Not-recommended solution:

I've seen this "solution" in forums and we do not recommend it. Keeping the server as is and downgrading the workstation to 12.1 or 12.x older versions. This may work but only temporarily because any future software install or update will bring 12.2 back.

Good work! It turns out ADSKFLEX.exe is not getting updated when installing / updating to version 11.18. At least not on our server. Stopping / killing the FlexLM service / ADSKFLEX.exe won't help - it just won't update ADSKFLEX.exe. I solved it by renaming ADSKFLEX.exe to ADSKFLEX.exe.old and then re-installed 11.18. Then the new version IS installed. On the client, switched the license manager back to the latest version and everything works fine again.

NB: the File Version for the latest ADSKFLEX.exe no longer corresponds with the version number of the whole package (11.18). It reads 3.9.46.0 on my server.

You can also just extract the exe files from the MSI and overwrite the old files. Then you're certain if the files are actually replaced.

A reliable way to chekc the correct version of the files is to run:
adskflex.exe -v

lmgrd.exe -v

lmutil.exe -v

from the command shell.
