mental ray plugin for maya 2016 not installing

I recently downloaded and installed the student edition for Maya 2016 and found that the mental ray plug-in was not installed.

I downloaded the plug-in from Autodesk, but every time I try to install it I get the following error message:

The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the program. Verify that the program to be upgraded exists on your computer and that you have the correct upgrade patch.

I have unistalled and re-installed Maya 2016 several times and I keep getting this error message.

What do I need to do to get mental to install on Maya 2016 student version?

mr is not in the same install like maya anymore. so you have to download it seperately. first of all the install: https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/maya/downloads/caas/downloads/content/mental-ray-plugin-for-maya-2016.html?v=2016

and than the patch to whatever service pack matches your maya service pack! i.e. sp4 https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/maya/downloads/caas/downloads/content/autodesk-maya-2016-service-pack-4.html

the error message you get because you try to patch mr without having it installed at all.
