Recommended steps for installing most Autodesk Products

Installation of Autodesk products on Windows OS is unique to each user/machine. There are no set rules/guidelines that satisfy every installation. Certain installations will finish without a single glitch and others will end up being involved. Supporting Autodesk installation through this forum is also a challenge, since we (the users) do not have any insight into your configuration.

That's why @TravisNave, @RDAOU, and @Mark.Lancaster have compile a list of steps to assist you in your Autodesk installation. Although this information is not a one size fits all concept, it's a step in the right direction in supporting users who will be installing Autodesk products or currently faced with installation issues.

This posting is currently based on information as of March 31st 2016 and will be updated as installation steps will most likely change over time. Please make sure to read all solutions and postings to ensure you have the latest information.

Recommended steps for installing most Autodesk Products

Prerequisite

Make sure you have administrator rights to your PC/laptop,

User Access Control (UAC) is switched to “Never Notify”.

Change in the UAC may require a reboot

At the end of a successful installation you may change your UAC back to the original setting if needed.

If possible, temporary disable your Anti-Virus application.

We suggest cleaning out your temp folder and delete as many files and folders as possible.

Click Windows Start and type %TEMP% in the search box.

Select all files & folders and delete them.

Certain temporary files and folders will not be able to be deleted because they are currently in use by the OS and/or any other applications you currently have open. Skip any of these files/folders and continue on with the deletion process.

Connected via a hard-wired (wired) network/Internet connection for downloading needs.

Download Steps

Product download:

Pre-2017 version: Access the Autodesk Virtual Agent and follow the download links to your product. Certain products may not be available through the Autodesk Virtual Agent and you must access those products through your Autodesk or Student/Educational account.

2017 version: Download by accessing your Autodesk Account or Educational Account login. Switch the download method to “Browser Download” and do not use the “Install Now” option. The “Browser Download” option can be found if you select the “More Option” link under the “Install Now” button. If the “More Option” link is not available to you, either change the platform to a given operating system or switch to all languages in order to see the “Browser Download” choice.

Important: Download all of the parts (some applications only have a single part to download) for your product. If you're downloading through your Autodesk Account please pay attention in how many files need to be downloaded for your application. Certain browses and/or your settings may not always permit all the necessary parts to be downloaded.

If prompted, always save your files to your machine. Do not select Run at this time.

“Autoplay” settings for Windows 10 may launch part 1 of the download before any of the others parts have finished downloading. In this happens to you please review RDAOU’s information as indicated here.

If the download does fail, we suggest trying another browser (IE, Firefox, or Chrome) to perform this operation.

Always make sure the download (of all parts) has fully completed, before continuing onto the installation steps.

Installation Steps

Navigate to your download folder location.

Extract (double click) part <file name>_001_00X.sfx.exe (or the single file download). In a few seconds the extraction will start and prompt you to extract to C:\Autodesk. The extraction location should be a local drive and shouldn't be changed to a network or external drive location.

There's no need to extract any other parts of the download since the extraction will automatically do this for you.

If the extraction does fail and indicates some type of file corruption. We suggest using another browse to perform this download operation, download using another PC/laptop or check with your IT staff regarding downloading procedures for your organization.

Once the extraction is finished, the installation will automatically start. Follow the installation steps for your product

Pre-2017 Autodesk version: Make sure you have your serial # and product key handy since the installation will require this information.

Autodesk 2017 version: Serial number and product key is no longer required for the installation. This information is now entered when the application is first launched. Also review this article if you have a network license type for your Autodesk 2017 product.

TravisNave, RDAOU, and Mark.Lancaster wish you luck in your installation and hopefully this information was beneficial to you.

Thank you for participating in the Installation and Licensing forum and have a great day.

Dear Autodesk team,

I've recently been trying for the last days to install Autodesk 3ds max 2016.

I have windows 8 and went through numerous re-installations, it seems that no matter what, it just will not work.

I've tried everything, first I can’t even run this "exe" that's on my computer since it is adamantly claiming that this adlmint file is missing which seems to be missing for the last 50 or so attempts and even the MSI runs into problems because other problems.

Then finally, after 50+ attempts, I get something and when I boot it, I meet another dead end....

When I open the 3dsmax exe it says "The Software License Failed to Initialize. Error 30".

I installed this attempt from the autocad virtual agent and it was for my 2016 version, student version which asked me to enter my product and license in it, which was accepted prior.

Please help.

Thanks.

@Anonymous

Welcome to the community and hopefully my (or someone else) reply will be beneficially to you.

This is not Autodesk, this is a world wide (public) user forum where users are assisting others. Although Autodesk does monitor these forums, it doesn't mean they will see and/or respond to your issue in a timely fashion. In addition do not post (including screen shots) and/or share any personal information (such as your serial #) here.

If you tried that many times I can only suspect you have a "messed up" system now and that's why its failing. I would suggest that you perform a clean uninstall using these steps. I would also make sure you have the latest/required service packs for Windows 8. Follow by reviewing the information I have below the line/above my signature and follow those steps to download and install your application. Good luck.

As of May 9th, @Darin.Green has created a posting that has links to some of the major Autodesk 2017 products. So the recommended steps have been updated to include this.

Download Steps

Product download:

Pre-2017 version: Access the Autodesk Virtual Agent and follow the download links to your product. Certain products may not be available through the Autodesk Virtual Agent and you must access those products through your Autodesk or Student/Educational account.

2017 version: Certain Autodesk 2017 products can now be found amd downloaded from here. If the product is not listed, then download by accessing your Autodesk Account or Educational Account login.

I'm sorry to be a pain but...followed the installation step as you suggested..:

- Go to Autodesk

- Students and Educators ( free education license product )

- Pick 'Autocad Electrical"

- Pick "version 2016 " Check

- Pick "Operating System " ..( tried W32 bit, 64 bit ) Check

- Pick " language " ( english ) Check

- I get the " serial number , key , file size , and authorization and the "install now " option, but no " more option " below the "install now "as you describe....

Any other suggestions ?

@Anonymous

Since you are using 2016... IF you followed the instructions exactly it would've taken you to the Autodesk Virtual Agent to downlaod your applicatoin. For the 2016 product the instructions never indicated to go to Autodesk/Educational site to download.

Update: For clarification I meant since the AutoCAD Electrical 2016 download is on the Virtual Agent you wouldn't have to go to your Educational account to downlaod AutoCAD Electrical per my instructions. The download is located in the Virtual Agent under AutoCAD products.

Hi Mark...still having problems....

I went to Virtual Agent and downloaded Acad Elecrtrical 2016 part 1 and then part 2....

Turned off UAC, stopped my Bitdefender and

proceded to install part 1 and sometime during the installation it said "AutoCad Electrical 2016 is not found on this computer. You will need to install AutoCad Electrical 2016 to install this product specific pack " then it stops .

Sorry if I don't get this but...is it this not what I'm trying to do ?

Btw , I downloaded the 2017 free 30 day trial without any problems and its working fine....

Any other ideas that I might be missing or doing wrong ?

Thanks

@Anonymous

It sounds like you have some left over AutoCAD/AutoCAD Electrical 2016 stuff but I'm only assuming at this point based on that message.

If you have Windows 7 or 8/8.1 use Microsoft Fixit. With Fixit you need to run it for each application that you need to uninstall. Cleanout any left Autodesk 2016 information

For Windows 10, use the Microsoft Cleanup Utility.

In my signature are the links to these applications.

Then run the installation again from the setup.exe in the C:\Autodesk\<Autocad electrical folder 2016>

Well sorry to say but I'm getting frustrated with this..Run MrFixit ,paused my Bitdefender , UAC i also off , and the Flex licencing is on auto, got rid of all Acad Electrical 2016, tried to re-install Part 1 of Acad Electrical 2016....and now I get " .NET 4.5 is not installed .AutoCAD Electrical 2016 cannot be installed without this component. See your system administrator for more information "I"ve never seen these many issues installing a program before ....( Autodesk should really step-up because obviously there is and a problem )(BTW .NET 4.5 is installed on this computer and I would bet that if I purchased the product it would install famously....which I cannot afford to do )Thanks anyways

I'm installing 2018 Infrastructure Design Suite Premium from an Autodesk supplied flash drive and receiving the "Some programs failed to install" error message. The log file seems to be listing error=1619. All prerequisites listed in this thread are met. I've run AIDA with no luck resolving the issue. The AIDA.zip file has been submitted to Autodesk for help.

Since most of the help topics on this issue reference a download installation, just wondering if I can get any constructive suggestions here for the flash drive installation procedure?

Thanks!
