The license agreement allows for the user to have an additional activation
for the laptop for when they are away from their normal workstation.
Therefore it is proper to simply activate the product on the laptop. If
the seat is a network seat, then Autodesk will supply you with a "home use"
serial for this purpose, if you are under Subscription.

Good Luck!

Installing to roam using LTU

The scenario is a user has a laptop that he takes off site, and he has an Inventor SLM perpetual license installed on his desktop fixed workstation.

He wants to export the license to his laptop whilst he goes off site, then import it back onto his desktop when he returns to the office, exactly what the license transfer utility is for, right?

So I install Inventor onto that laptop, but as soon as I open it... the **** thing wants to activate every time it's opened. If I let it do that, he's consumed 2 licenses and I don't want that. I want to leave the auto-activations for genuine installs to avoid having to waste my time contacting Autodesk or a reseller for manual code creation in the future.

So I re-install it on the laptop using serial number 123-12345678 so it can't activate. But that then doesn't let me import his genuine license as it doesn't recognise the serial number 123-12345678! If I change that back to the proper serial, there's a chance it will activate again.

Why is this so difficult? Is there not a way to install a license with the intention of it being a dead install ready to import a license using the LTU? Why does the laptop need to have a matching serial number to the one that's being imported?! If it activates on the laptop then it surely defeats the purpose of the LTU? Am I missing something/being unreasonable here or is this unnecessarily awkward?

LTU is for stand-alone single-PC license transfers, not for server LM licenses I believe.

Yea that's what I'm trying to do, SLM single license transfer from desktop to laptop. The problem being the laptop, I don't want it to activate before I can import the license.

Oh? I was always told that the home use terms was strictly for home use, not to double up as two installs in business... I even read the terms yesterday and it didn't sound like this laptop would fall under the allowances of home use. He isn't taking it home, he's taking it onto customer sites...

That's fine. The extra activation is generally meant for use away from the
regular work machine -- aka laptops. Just activate it and end your
headache. Haha!

Awesome. Definitions sometimes cloud the legalese. Home use is simply a
way to state that you can get a 13 month stand-alone for 2nd activation if
you cannot connect to your license manager. But the license agreement
already allows you a 2nd stand-alone activation for another machine for
when you can't access your regular machine. So feel at ease on that.
