Fix for Irregular Terrain in existing Model Builder generated models

This issue was brought to our attention the other day, and after some research there is a way to resolve this for existing models if you experienced the issue. Please follow these steps:

open Surface Layers dialog
under Terrain Surfaces>Uncategorized drag elevation2 terrain beneath elevation1 terrain in Ground Surfaces
turn off elevation1
turn on elevation2
click OK to accept the changes

Additionally, we are currently working on addressing this within Model Builder which will be available in the near future to help avoid this issue completely.

I forgot to note, this is only happening in 2019.3 Model Builder models in some areas. All other versions are working as expected.

The fix has now been deployed to 19.3 Model Builder. No update needed, changes should be available immediately. Please have a look and let us know if there are any further issues.

I am having this happen again in InfraWorks 2020.2 with the irregular Terrain once it is imported into Civil 3D. I have tried the solution above with no luck. Do you know if this is a current issue again? I have tested on several different models with the same results.

Hey @DaneMartin

Does the terrain look correct in InfraWorks? Exporting to IMX irregular terrain, will result with that same irregular terrain in C3D. The issue above remains if you mess around with the layers, so I am not sure what state your model is in.

Additionally, the terrain generated by Model Builder is not the best, so it could just be an area with bad USGS data.

Try switching to "engineering mode" and turning on the contours in InfraWorks. Should be easier to compare to what you are seeing in C3D.

Yes, Engineering View is such a nice added feature and I forget to use it. Yeah, terrain in InfraWorks look pretty good in the engineering view. Do you want me to send you something to check the location from your end?

Could you send me the area that you created from Model Builder? I can then create a model and see what happens when I bring it in C3D. Did you use IMX or open the IW SQLITE file directly in C3D?

The Model Builder location is west of Topeka KS near I-70 & SW Urish Road. LAT: 39.057165 Long:-95.788357

I have a co-work that still has InfraWorks 2019.3 and is having same issue with another location using the work around. The coordinate system is KS83-NF. Thanks for your help. I tried sending shape file but this forum web site does not allow those file types.

Thanks for your patience. I did some testing this morning and from what I can tell, the terrain is pretty spot on in each product. Please see screen shot below. Are you not getting the same results?

Yeah, that looks good. Although, that is not what I'm getting. The image I attached in my first post shows what I'm getting, which looks very similar to the issue back on the 2019.3 update... So, thinking about your results I decided to just grabbed a new Model Builder area and pulled up the Layers window. This time I did not turn off Elevation 1 or 2 and left them both on and it worked. When I have used 2020.2 recently to pull surfaces into Civil 3D I have had to turn off Elevation 1 layer to make it work correctly. I guess this has been user error. Thank you for checking this out and working with me through this issue.

Thanks for reporting back, and I am glad to hear you have something workable now. As I mentioned, there is still an issue if you go into the layers dialog and changes things around. We have this in our backlog and will be investigating it thoroughly. In the meantime I would recommend avoiding making any changes to the Model Builder "elevations" in the layers dialog.
