Managing surface terrain layers

I have a site that I have imported an existing ground IMX from Civil 3D and a proposed grading surface IMX from Civil 3D. Both come in as terrain surfaces. What I am trying to figure out is how to place the proposed grading surface on top of the existing ground surface within the surface layer dialog box.

I can do that by placing my existing ground and proposed grading in the same "Ground Surface" layer by placing the proposed grading above the existing ground, but as you look at the attached image I'd like to use the "Proposed Grading" layer for my proposed grading and then get it above the "Ground Surface" layer. I cannot make that happen... Is this possible, or is there a work around for something like this so my proposed grading ends up on top? Thanks!

Hi @randy.nolden ,

I see the only way to make this happen is to move all surfaces currently in your "ground surface" category to your "proposed garding" category and move your proposed grading surface to the "ground surface" category.
It might mess up with other objects in your model as draping only works for "Ground Surface".

The new surfaces functionality in InfraWorks was desigend for subsurfaces display, the top surface is always the ground terrain. So, it's not possible to have a surface object "floating" above the terrain surface.

Yes, as Karsten indicated, any surface that is not in the ground surface category is "split" away from all other surfaces.

I have attached an example of a stockpile of gravel. One as part of the Ground Surface category and the other in its own category.
