Retrieving the road outline in Civil

I exported an IMX from Infraworks and opened it in Civil.

I can see that the road surface is clearly flat, but I would like to have the outline as lines as well.

Is that doable?

could you send more details?

Is this a planning road or a component road in InfraWorks?
Shouldn't a road surface be imported as well in Civil 3D?
To get outlines of a corridor, you can use Civil 3D tool, can't you?

This screenshot shows a Planning road on top and a Component road below

Provided, you have the IMX of that area.

Here we see how it looks in Civil3D.

I must confess that I use Planning roads more often than Component roads. Now that I tried out Component road, I can see that the outlines are visible.

Is it possible to turn the Alignment-elements in Civil to roads with width, or even better, looking the same as the ones in Infraworks? Similar to how the Component roads look in Civil?
Which tool would you suggest to extract an outline?

the planning roads are imported as alignments in Civil 3D. But there should still be a road surface just for the planning roads.
You could try converting the planning roads into component roads before loading the data into Civil 3D.

The explanation is that planning roads are style-based in InfraWorks (alignment+style) and component roads work more like corridors (assemblies+alignment).

I know about the Component Road approach and it has worked for me.

However, I would also like to know how I could do this with Planning Road as well.

From my understanding, you say that Planning Roads should generate surfaces in Civil as well, but that is not the case for me and only alignments are to be seen.

I might have missed a step or so - could you please point me further?

Do I need to create a style for it in Civil?

this is the planning road in InfraWorks:

And this is Civil 3D after importing the InfraWorks model:

You should see a "Proposed Ground surface for the planning road.

However, I don't know if that helps you to extract the outlines of the planning road. First, you need to extract the faces from the surface. Then delete the outer faces, and create a new surface where you add the faces. Now you have a clean surface for the planning road only. But the boundary might not be correct in curves. So this needs a manual correction again.

Maybe it's easier to create offset alignments with the width of the planning roads in Civil 3D?

Or you convert the planning road to component roads just for the export of an IMX file. Then undo the conversion, before you close InfraWorks.
