New to processing drone data, but I've encountered a problem I cannot solve. I am working with flight data on a gravel pit.

I've successfully processed the pictures in Recap Photo, with ground targets and assigned the coordinate system:

I edited the project in Recap Pro, taking out water and tree areas:

I have successfully brought the point cloud into Infraworks, with coordinate system assigned:

Then, when I click "Point Cloud Terrain" to process the point cloud, I get a blank screen:

I've tried changing settings with the Terrain creation, exporting files to bring into Civil 3D, but nothing is there. I'm missing something, but I can't figure out what?

Any help would be appreciated, happy to upload any files that may help. Thanks!!

Hi @ryan ,

that sounds very strange. It looks as the terrain generation is not successful with your point cloud data.
Do you see anything in the InfraWorks log file? Check %AppData%\Roaming\Autodesk\Autodesk InfraWorks\logs for the log file of that Infraworks session. Can you share the corresponding log file or the point cloud data? I can create and share an OneDrive folder.

The reason why you don't use the elevation model from Recap Photo is, because you wanted to make edits to the point cloud yourself (removing trees etc.) before you start processing a terrain, correct?

Regards,

Karsten.

I ran the RCS file from "Recap Pro Edited" with IW 2020.2 and everything seems to be fine. I even brought up BING image and it lands at the right place. Attached is the terrain overlay after processing through point cloud terrain.

Was it pre-existing model or new model you ran (Just to see if there is any CS mismatch)? Can you try settings->Regenerate to see if the view is off the right location for some reason? Can you also provide the IW version number being used?

Hi @ryan ,

I have also tested the point cloud terrain generation and can confirm Ramesh's results.

I used the InfraWorks model "before" removed the point cloud and added the "Recap Pro Edited" point cloud.

Terrain generation just went fine and everything lined up nicely.

I noticed two things with your data:

Your log files show that you are using InfraWork 2018.2. This could be an explanation as the version is a bit outdated. I have tested in InfraWorks 2020.2 and I believe Ramesh tested with this version or an actual beta version.

The InfraWorks model "after" looks like below when you open it. This usually indicates that a data source is not using the correct units or coordinate system. The model is zoom out to the globe scale as it tries to zoom extent to show all model data. In such a case the model regeneration takes a lot of time and the program can freeze if the geometry that is out of scale is very complex.

Regards,

Karsten
