In this case I use closed polylines created in Civil 3D, each representing a material type (asphalt, shoulder, grass field, road stripes, etc.). Each is exported as a polygon feature using MAPEXPORT in sdf or shp format. These are brought into Infraworks and draped onto a surface. I think these appear far superior to ones of the planning or componenet roads as long as the elevation data is correct. A new proposal without having the planning / component roads is best used.

I am trying to import some linemarking from Civil 3D and drape it on my new road layout. I use mapexport to export a shp file I can import into Infraworks.
I can import it, but it drapes on the terrain under the new road. If I turn the Sketched Roads layer off I can see it, but I can't get it to drape onto the new road as linemarking. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks

Hi @Pendles10 ,

roads are not treated as terrain where you can drape features on.
There are a few workarounds I can think of.
As you are using planning roads, these are draped on terrain. For your road striping, use a constatnt vertical offset so that they appear above the road. The vertical offset can be applied in the data source configuration.

A bit more work: Load the InfraWorks model into Civil 3D. There you will get a surface for the transportation network. Save that surface as LandXML and import it back to InfraWorks. Once merged with your existing InfraWorks terrain, it should be able to drape objects on it. I cannot guarantee that you still need to apply an offset.

Regards,

Karsten.
