Profile is changing while converting to design road

Hi,

I imported road alignment with profile as SHP file from Civil 3D. While converting to design road, road profile is changing...

Any idea what can cause that change ?

I was also trying to import road straight from C3D file but after importing road is not visible.

I am using IF360 version 18.0.46.0

I had this same thing happen to me yesterday. I thought it was just a fluke, but now I see I'm not the only one.

Do the elevations on the converted road match the elevations in C3D?

They match the elevations from C3D before converting to design road and they are wrong afer converting.

One more question, does the alignment from C3D have "advanced" geometry not supported by InfraWorks?

@kubastan89, @Todd_Rogers, I came across a similar problem some time ago. Vertical shifts can also happen when two or more Road centerlines touch or cross each other because InfraWorks will always relate the Road centerlines to the existing surface in the model. Therefore it doesn't make sense to try and import 3D SHP data as centerlines because you will loose the 3D part.

The only way to do this correctly is:

- create a design top-surface of your Road design in your C3D DWG

- if you want your materials to come in correct, make sure you have setup your link codes in C3D as InfraWorks expects them to turn them into coverages

- then connect your C3D DWG (if your using the same versions of the software) or use IMX export files

- during data source configuration you can choose which surfaces get imported

- go to your Style Rules for Coverages and make some rules for your Linkcodes to turn them into the correct materials

I will take a look at the data as well as I have seen a similar issue just recently with shape files as roads in InfraWorks - after the road conversion the profile information was gone.

I`ve been always importing shp files with horizontal and vertical informations and It always worked fine with my IF360 2017 even when roads crossed another roads

There must be some bug with IF360 2018...

Can you try to import that road straight from my C3D file beacuase after importing I see nothing in IW.

@kubastan89, I tried some things with your Civil 3D DWG but there are problems importing your Main Road into InfraWorks.

Here my findings:

Connecting directly your Civil DWG (2018 saved) in InfraWorks (2018.1) results in a partial Alignment of about 1km
Exporting a LandXML from Civil 3D and connecting that in InfraWorks results in the complete Alignment but it gets draped and loses the profile
Exporting an IMX from Civil 3D and connecting that gives the same result as 1 above

So, I'm not sure why only a small part of the complete ALM gets imported and maybe @Karsten.Saenger can confirm the same problem and a possible reason for that?

Still, I would suggest you also try my earlier workflow because that is the Autodesk preferred way of getting a Civil 3D (detailed) Road Design into InfraWorks.

I`ve always though that new versions are realeased to mitigate bugs but It seems like they cause new ones...

When I import top surface from C3D to IF360 I won`t be able to add new roads and create junctions with this road in IF360.

@kubastan89, then why not design your Main Road directly in InfraWorks in the first place? Then you have all possibilities to quickly layout junctions and can always transfer your design to Civil 3D for detailed design and conforming to your local roadstandards.

Because the road is already designed and it takes a lot of time to copy the road horizontally and vertically in IW360.

I have done some test and I can confirm that the 3D shape file is imported with the correct heights, but as soon as you convert the road to a design road the vertical information is lost and the road is draped on terrain.

I think that is as designed and maybe @SethHall can confirm it.

I can also obeserve if you import the Civil 3D DWG only part of the road has a style. I selected another style for the raod manually and then it look correct. However, the profile is not imported with the road and it's draped to terrain again.

My feeling tells me that there is something wrong with the DWG, can't say what. The DWG crashed my Civil 3D once and there are a lot of profiles assigned to the alignment.

With the surfaces that are imported with the DWG I am also not sure if everything is correct.

That being said, I'd like to come back to the workflow to work with the road shape file.

I have MAPIMPORTed the shape into Civil 3D and created an alignment with the corresponding profile from it. The basic workflow is shown here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvZCNfR9f2c

-> with a dumyy surface, create a quick profile from a feature line, export to LandXML, delete surface and profile and alignement/feature line, import LandXML -> result: alignment with corresponding profile. Save DWG.

Then add the DWG to InfraWorks. You get a design road with correct profile:

@kubastan89, appearantly InfraWorks has trouble connecting to an alignment and profile view with many associated profiles. I removed all of them besides the main road profile and then the direct import went fine.

@Karsten.Saenger Thanks for your workflow. I`m pretty sure it gives the proper results but I`ve made use of @John_DeLeeuw solution.

These other profiles were trenches profiles.
