Here are 2 methods to do this

https://autode.sk/2NamDzm

https://autode.sk/2LcsbHL

once this is done you can likely do away with the first 2 2d pocket opps, and just rough the whole pocket with 3D pocket.

Hello:

I've attached a v2018 part with an HSM program in it for my first 3D pocket. I think that I've got it laid out pretty OK, but it seems like Op #16 spends an awful lot of time cutting air even though I've got the "rest machining" box checked. It sure doesn't seem to know what material is and isn't left behind from the previous op. Can someone suggest something else?

Or maybe there's a totally different way to do this. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

[Just realized I put this in the wrong forum, copied and created a duplicate here to get it seen]

3D toolpaths rely on good inputs. Model your stock exactly as it will be machined and select that in your setup.

My stock in the real world will be a blank off the lathe. I have the setup done with no additional stock, but the software still sees it as a bounding box rather than the round blank. If there's another way, please clarify.

create a 3d model of the stock as it would come off the lathe. you can do this with the revolve feature as a second body in this file. then select that revolve body as the stock in your setup under "from solid" mode.

I'm not sure I follow how this would go. The first two features in the tree basically represent the blank that will come from the lathe. The features following this represent what is milled. If I'm going to create another body in the model, aren't I just doing the same thing I did before? And won't it contaminate the milled features by "back filling" material over them?

Thanks, this helped a lot. Created a new solid for a partially finished blank will come in handy. However, I wasn't able to eliminate the first two 2D pocket operations as you mentioned. Even with the new setup solid, at the highest level of the pocket it still appeared to be spending quite a bit of time cutting material that wasn't there. So I ended up leaving them.

One other thing I learned though.... When using a rest machining operation, I created the roughing operation, the duplicated it for the rest machining operation. Then go into the rest op and change the tool and check the box. This helps to make sure all the selected geometries are the same and the continuity is better between the two operations.

Thanks again for your help!
