Inventor HSM Pro / Inv HSM latest dev. version.

Can someone explain the utility of the Chamfer Clearance setting on the passes tab for 2D Chamfer? Right now, I find that any value other than 0 results in 'no passes'. Thanks.

Fred

PS Did a search but could find no references to this particular situation.

The Chamfer Clearance setting is used to avoid model geometry. Despite its name, the 2D Chamfer path is a 3D model-aware toolpath.

atom,

All well and good, but try that with a part that has a pre-existing chamfer. You'll find the genesis of this inquiry on the Fusion CAM forum in last day or so. Adding a chamfer to the model and then trying the 2D chamfer with any value in chamfer clearance results in no tool path (as far as I can see - this is with picking the bottom edge of the chamfer). Hence my question about its utility or intended effect. Thanks.

Fred

It was designed to chamfer sharp corners not existing chamfers in the model.

just subpress the chamfers in the model and then use the 2d chamfer and all is good.

to use existing chamfers you hace to use the 2d contour with an chamfer tool, but it wll collide with the your walls if you do not model the chamfers correctly.

EDIT: as the vido states use to deburr so people do not cut the hands.

Pretty much what @lenny_1962 said. Think of it this way: you've told the toolpath to chamfer the edge you've selected, but told it to clear the part by X amount. Well the modeled chamfer is "the part" and since the tool is the same angle, that avoidance distance must be set to 0 to work.

Ok....then under what circumstances would there be a value other than 0 in the clearance?

I've never used this function for anything else but deburring, much as Len descirbed. But a post in another forum is what got me to wondering what is it used for? If 2D chamfer is only intended for chamfering sharp edges, then chamfer width and tip offset are the only two values that seem useful.

If the 'clearance' were something like an additional amount to add to the tool radius to pull the tool off the part prior to contacting vertical walls, etc. I could see its utility; but right now it's a mystery to me (as are many things). Thanks for the responses, I'm running a little denser that usual today.

Fred
