so....

im using the drililng rapid out out cycle with a tapping head to tap holes...

the problem im having is

i want to set the retract height high enough to ensure that when it pulls out of the hole it goes high enough to make sure that the tap has cleared the hole before it continues to the next hole...thus ensuring the tap isnt still coming out of the hole when it moves to the next and breaks the tap..

the problem so far is that its ripping the top couple of threads out of the hole when it retracts ...

i have the feed height set to 5mm above the hole..and retractc height set to 12mm above the hole..so whats happening i think is that its retracting at the feedrate i have set up to the feed height...then its using the rapid feedrate up to the 12mm retract height... thats whats causing the thread tearing of the top couple of threads,,

so... is there a way i can make it use the retract feedrate all the way up to the retract height instead of just up to the feed height..... this would solve the problem..

any insight appreciated..

You would have to raise the feed height more to get more feed movement indeed.

You can make the retract and feedheight the same so it doesn't have to go higher than with a rapid than it has gone with the feed height.

Wouldn't the Boring cycle be a much better cycle to use? You can set the retract feed faster than the plunge feed.

Actaully he would need a slower retract feed to be sure the tap is out of the hole.

Tapmatic told me to run the retract feed at 1.05* tapping feedrate but I suppose it will depend on the head used. Presumably the OP is using a self-reversing head of course.

Yeah and for that reason I would say you want more rotations for it coming out of the hole. But yeah totally depends on the tapping head and the machine cycle.

But indeed a lot of different cycles to use.

the boring cycle would accomplish the same thing...yes...because it gives you separate control over the plunge and retract feedrates

i have the tapmatic 30x...the reverse rpm on it is 1.75 times the tapping rpm..

it has .140 of self feed...and the directions say to make the feed height plus the units self feed equal to the total tapping feed depth

im tapping at 500 rpm x the pitch .8 is 400mm/minute plunge rate and so the retract rpm is 875 and the retract rate 700mm/minute retract rate

its a 12mm hole so i set the bottom height in the heights tab .140in higher to account for the .140in of the units self feed (i think i did this all right)

the kicker is that i did a 20hole test before all this trouble..and it went flawlessly.. but i did not pay attention to the height settings...and i wa tapping at 700rpm i think..im not sure...im pretty frustrated,.,.had to take a break..LOL..
