4th Axis Substitution Geometry Selection Help in HSM Works

Hello All,

I am having a really hard time selecting geometry to get a 4th axis substitution tool path to generate. I am machining polyurethane so a simple contour or project would work. I will attach the 3D model.

Thanks for posting your question on the forum. Currently HSMWorks does not have a 2D Wrap Toolpath, which would be the perfect strategy to machine this part. I would suggest downloading Fusion 360 and setting up your part there. In this case, because the pocket stretches completely around the cylinder, the program cannot unwrap the entire profile because it is continuous. You would have the break that continuity with splitting the face of the pocket or by splitting the body in two and using multiple toolpaths. Here's a video on 2D Wrap Toolpath that will guide you through the setup and selections for the toolpath to generate. Thanks and let me know if you have any other questions.

If you can get a flat pattern of the sketch you can use that to cut it out in fusion so it does it in one go not many

I should add that the issue with axis substitution is that when applied it will not cut the part accurately unless it is modeled to take advantage of the way substitution cuts. You can see the remaining material here at the top of the channel (using Fusion 360 Wrapped 2D Contour):

I wonder if you can mix and match with indexing the cross bits with wrap for the middle bit.

They all follow the radius though. Actually I think it can be done with Swarf and 4th axis constraint but that's still in beta and not dependable. I might give it a shot tomorrow over lunch.

When will HSMWorks be upgrading to this convenient and powerful toolpath wrap strategy?

I'll look into downloading Fusion 360, but that's just yet another software platform to download, pay for, learn, troubleshoot a post, and program with.

Something I just found out is that 2D Wrap Toolpath is available now in the developmental version HSMWorks2018-R2.42017 of HSMWorks. You can download it here:

No, 2D Wrapping is not implemented yet even in the beta mode of HSMWorks 2018 R2.42017, simply that support is now in the program.

I do not have that option, at least not in the Premium license for the same version. Can check Ultimate when I get home.

If you follow the link I posted it goes to one by @fonsecr saying that it is not implemented yet, so this is curious indeed.

I appreciate that a beta mode is available, but will not risk a crash of our machining centers in hearing that it's not intended for production work. Thank you though. Does that mean that next years' 2018 version should have this flushed out and ready?

In the meantime, use "Axis Substitution" within HSMWorks 2017 in SolidWorks, or alike, for 2D, 3D, and multi-axis toolpaths which allow it. I've found it in 2D & 3D Adaptive Clearing, 3D Contour, & Multi-axis Contour.

@Matthew-R Confirmed, currently only available in Ultimate. Updating my home install to R2.42038 to see if it fixes the wrapped issue I encountered on this part. Will be much easier to show the issues with wrapping this part as well.

The latest experimental release will cut the part as designed. See screenshot. I attached your part file with the toolpath. I tried the previous experimental release without success. It sucked.

This new release selects the drive geometry very well so far. Congrats to @fonsecr and his team.

Thanks development team, we now have a somewhat legit 4th axis wrap solution, all though not perfect, (perfect will support the Y axis moves to create 4th axis work per 3D model), way better that what we had before.
