Inventor HSM - Fusion 360 Threading & Turning issues

Hey guys,

1. When is this turning Radii graphics issue going to be fixed please? It doesn't look good when showing off the software, and it's really quite confusing to look at when programming for real:

2. Why isn't there a feed radius for Inventor HSM turning? Not having it for thread turning really kinda sucks, because you have to use the clearance radius to stop excessive X axis movements between each pass.

3. Then with thread turning, the pitch value defaults to 1 all the time because the expression is being pulled from the Thread Milling Pitch parameter:

4. Then when you post out the code, in most of the turning posts, it uses the cutting feedrate from the tool tab, instead of using the pitch value.

5. There aren't any lead in and lead out elements to a turning threading toolpath, so the input boxes on the tool tab are useless. Which makes all the feed inputs on the tool tab useless. Partially reported on CAM-4545

6. I think there should be lead in & lead out elements to the thread turning toolpath. Syncing is only in play for the cutting movement and the fade out, not for the approach and retract. You can see this by looking at the toolpath data, and checking when the sync command activates and deactivates.

7. Why is the required holder for internal bore threading called a 'face threading' holder? It's a strange thing to call it, and very non-intuitive.

There are other issues as well, by they already have CAM tickets.

Thanks for the feedback!

I'm creating tickets for these in our bug tracking system, and will look at fixing them. Hope to have at least some of the most annoying stuff fixed in a development build soon.

@KerimY wrote:

Do you have any details or examples.

It looks like the expression has been updated in recent builds to:

(tool_type == 'turning threading' || tool_type == 'thread mill') ? tool_threadPitch : 1

So that would have fixed it.

Regarding point 4, it looks like the Fanuc & Haas posts have been fixed. However, the Heidenhein & Tormach posts won't post out the threading toolpath, throwing an error stating feed/spindle sync aren't supported. I've attached the sample for you to try.

The Inventor HSM turning holder definition doesn't display the code and doesn't provide Chamfer Width & Height input values. Which are clearly needed to define the holder properly.

This long standing insert size definition issue really needs to be dealt with and applies to all three products:

This is how the tool is defined, where you can see the relationship between the cutting edge length on the insert, and the head length on the holder don’t match up.

Tool definition from HSMWorks attached. Just change the file extension back to hsmlib

Apologies for the missing update on this. We have in the meantime fixed a couple of the issues, specifically:

Item 1, Turning Radii looking bad.

Item 3, The pitch in turning thread operation is defaulted to the mill expression.

Hi @mikkel.ostergaard, good to hear that these thing are getting fixed.

Maybe you can also answer one other longstanding turning issue: Turning "in control" creates toolpath that does not make sense. Whats the progress on that?

We finally got the insert size issue fixed (kudos to @thomas.chr). Turned out to be a different problem than first expected, having to do with the definition of insert size which is specified differently (inscribed circle radius vs cutting edge length) in imperial and metric, but treated the same internally.

The fix should be available in one of the next releases, for Fusion, Inventos HSM and HSMWorks.

So are you saying that in one unit it was meant to be inscribed circle, then in another cutting edge length? I haven't seen an insert manufacturer define an insert wth cutting edge length yet. But then i still have a lot to learn about turning.

Yes. According to the ISO standard the size of inserts is specified by the cutting edge length. A description of the turning tool code can be found at: http://www.cutwel.co.uk/learn-the-turning-tool-iso-code-system

I see that the ISO designation can be edge length, I have never personally seen a turning insert described other that by IC. I am fine either way but why does the tool definition ask for a diameter and not a cutting edge length if it is not referring to the IC?
