Hi everyone,

I'm having a lot of trouble copying and pasting within a sketch. I've been baffled by this since last night and made a little video to show you. I also have a screenshot of the shape I'm only trying to copy and paste without success.

Any help is appreciated!

The geometries I'm trying to copy and paste within the same sketch

a closer look

Phil

Pretty sure the problem is you have not selected copy before you drag the selected items. Because of the way you have your dialogs docked the move dialog is not expanding the show the copy option after you first select. If you dock the sketch palette to the left of the move dialog or just scroll the move dialog after making the selection you can then select the copy option.

Here's a simple example.

You could just use Ctrl+C then Ctrl+V for copy paste as well. Another better option might be to use a rectangular pattern to make a copy that would be linked to the original so they'd be identical. Or extrude the part and make the pattern using the solid tools, this would be best practice and create a more efficient design.

Mark

Absolutely, here it is. Thanks!

(and I cut down my video which only has my best take now 😉. This should make the issue clearer.)

Ok after removing the constraints one by one (sigh) I was able to pinpoint the culprit. When I removed the Circular Pattern Constraint (created from the Circular Pattern) I was then able to copy and paste the geometries as needed. If I put aside the fact the this is really counterintuitive (I was expecting to carry my constraint with as I copy/pasted), I still have to get rid of the constraint to do what I need to do. Is this really the way people work around this? This doesn't feel very efficient.

Took a look at your design and after a bit of poking around found the problem is one of your construction lines is not coincident with the others and that's' the one you've constrained with dimensions for position. With the other dimensions and constraints the sketch is confusing the solver. Screencast shows the problem, can only fix by deleting the outer circle and position dimensions.

Best practice for sketching in a solid modeling program is keep the sketch as simple as possible, this sketch is already slow and getting pauses when you try and add dimensions. You would be far better off not filleting the triangular pockets in the sketch. I would only draw one of the triangular pockets in the sketch, extrude the part then fillet the solid and pattern the others using the solid pattern feature. You will get far better performance like this and a simple sketch is going to be easier to edit and maintain.

Here's the screencast showing the problems. The over compilation of the sketch makes error finding more difficult as well!
