Trail lines disappearing from drawing after reference update

Often times I run into issues with trail lines disappearing after a reference update in the drawing workspace.
This issue can happen even if no changes were made to the animation workspace.

These are usually the steps that lead to this issue:

Drawing is referencing V1 of model and has no issue displaying the trail lines
I add or change a part, but do not change the animation workspace, save the model causing a V2 to be made
I update the drawing to reference V2
Trail lines disappear entirely or in part

Sometimes going and checking the animation workspace after will reveal trail lines that were once set to visible are now turned off and need to be turned back on or they show they are set to visible but are not actually showing a trail line.

I've attached some images below to show what is happening. This has happened to me on various models so its not localized to this example.

Animation workspace has the lines showing:

Drawing workspace is only showing some of the lines:

The only real fixes I have for this issue is:

Replacing the view will cause it to update properly (only if lines didn't bug out in the animation workspace)
Re-doing the animation to fix the trail line and doing another reference update

Either way it can be a pain if there is multiple lines to fix or views to replace

Hi rob - First, thank you for your thorough investigation of the problem. This takes time - but it makes it much easier for us to try and repeat it, and hopefully, find a solution.

I followed your steps on a few test assemblies - but I was not able to repeat the error. Here's what I did:

Created some bodies in a new part
Changed these to separate components (not two of the same components)
made a quick animation using a "component move command" ... not an auto-explode or something - showed trace lines
Made a drawing. Everything shows up.
Went back to the assembly - created a new body, changed that to a component, saved the assembly
Back in the drawing, updated, everything shows up

I continued and tried the following as well:

added a body - made it a component, copied a second instance of it into the assembly
animated both of these using the simple move component command - which creates two trace lines
Saved, updated the drawing, everything fine
Added another part - created in the same way as before with all the others, saved. Everything fine as well
Added another part - this time some random other part from my hub as a linked part (not created in the assembly), saved, updated the drawing....everything normal.

Is there anything at all that is different about what you are doing compared to my steps?

Does this happen every time - or just sometimes?

If you can share an assembly where it has happened, I can see if there is something wierd about that too.

You are essentially doing the same types of edits that I would be doing to re-create this issue. It doesn't seem to matter what type of edit is made as long as it causes a new file version to be made; at least from what I've seen thus far.
This is not a problem that happens all the time, however it has happened often enough that I'm now reporting it. I had it happen to me in two separate assemblies yesterday, but I've already fixed it by going back into the animation workspace and re-toggling the trail line visibility and re-saving.

Unfortunately I can't share these exact assemblies as they are work projects, however if I manage to re-create the problem at some point in another document I will try to share it here.

It's more of an inconvenience than anything; often causing me to do multiple saves to try and fix it.

The only other notable thing I can think of is that my drawings are multi-page documents and usually specific pages want to update by clicking on them after a reference update (They are grayed out in the page browser at the bottom of the UI). After the view updates then the trail lines disappear and often times going back into the design workspace reveals that wonkiness I showed in the first post where the trail line should be active but its not displaying properly.

OK – I tried that as well, using multi-sheet drawings and multiple moves….but nothing.
So – I guess we can start throwing down the last resort of all troubleshooting: What’s your OS & Graphic Card? 😊
In parallel, I’ll talk to some of the devs to see if they might have any ideas.

OS is Windows 10 Pro and graphics card is a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070

I did see that other post, however it was more to do with misalignment than disappearing so I thought it was a different enough issue to post a separate thread. However, the underlying issue may be causing both of our problems.

So....I spoke to the drawings team about this and we've got no idea what might be causing it. It has been logged - but we were not able to replicate the problem, even though we gave it a shot on several different machines. If you do see it, and can replicate it - or send us the file, that would be a great help.
