Import a huge model (30k + parts/subassemblies) from inventor an how to find the top assembly

Hello,

someone sent me an archive of a bridge that was built a few years ago. This bridge was modelled in inventor and for the placement of some safety rails I need acces to this model. (or submodels). As I work with Fusion 360, I like to import this model.

The archive however excists of 15.109 IAM- and 40.367 ITP files. The original designer(s) cannot be contacted.

First problem is: How do I find the top assembly and how do I know what ITP files and subassemblies belong to this? (so I can import only the files I really need)

Second problem is: Fusion just hangs, crashes or simply doesn't upload when I try to import this many files....

Hi @info7JY2S,

Can you please attach the Inventor files in a Zip file?
Are you Importing the inventor files through Desktop connector? or directly uploading to fusion datapanel?

Uhm.. we're talking about 39 Gb of inventor files here... I'm only allowed to attach 71Mb here....

I've tried importing files directly into Fusion 360 via the "upload" botton in the data panel.

If I just pick a few files or parts this works fine but then the model is not complete...

Hi @info7JY2S ,

Fusion 360 has an ability to import Inventor files through desktop connector.

Can you give a try installing desktop connector and try 'AnyCAD Workflow from Inventor into Fusion 360'.

The 39 Gb inventor files are they organised in different folders or they are in a single folder?

Hi Dsouzasujay,

I've installed desktopconnector, but if I read the AnyCad Workflow it states:

"The first step in this process is to create an Inventor model and save it through Desktop Connector. This allows it to be saved within Fusion Team."

The problem here is that I don't have Inventor. Only Fusion 360.

If I had Inventor, I wouldn't have to ask for an import in fusion right?

So this doesn't work

The 39 Gb are organised in dosens of folders and subfolders. I don't know what the top assembly is, if there is only one big model or several smaller models? Just lots and lots of files....

Hi @info7JY2S ,

It's recommended to install Inventor, but if you don't have Inventor, Then Just Drag and drop the files to the hub.

I have shown a workflow also attached a ipj file, Do let me know if it works.

@info7JY2S , It's the folder I have created.The folder name can be anything, But make sure to create the folder in a Team HUB.

Not in a Single-User Storage.

@info7JY2S , You can find right above the data panel.

If you don't have a Team, then you need to create one or Join.

ok found it and created a hub. Uploading however does not work flawless.

It either hangs on "preparing" or gives error messages after a certain amount of files uploaded.

You have created the hub, but you are uploading the inventor files in the fusion 360 web browser.

Please follow below steps:

Download Desktop Connector from THIS link and Install it.
In the taskbar, right-click on the Desktop Connector icon and select Sign In.
On the Autodesk-Sign In screen, enter your Fusion 360 credentials and click Sign In.
A connected drive is created on the windows browser

Open and you should find hubs inside the connected drive are marked with
Open the folder inside Hub.
Drag and drop the inventor files inside the folder
Select the default.ipj file i have provided in the earlier reply.
Inventor files will be uploaded and you should be able to see the same on Fusion 360 application.

I'm looking at this for an hour now.

I see no progress and no new files beïng added in the hub

I've selected the IPJ file...

Ok somehow the upload worked out to be succesfull and i can now see alle the IPT and IAM files in the data panel when I run Fusion 360.

however only IPT file seem to work properly when I open them. IAM files result in an empty model. Both when opening from the datapanel and when importing into an excisting model.

When the referencing .ipt is missing then the .iam file will be empty.

You can check the referencing files under 'Uses' by clicking 'V1'

Also, try sorting by "Date Modified" and open the very first .iam file directly (Not Inserting into another design)
