No auto-fit after first dimension

I could well be misunderstanding this announcement from the March 2021 "what's new" document, but I am not seeing this behavior in the current macOS version of Fusion 360:

Improved! Auto-fit window after scaling sketch on first dimension
Works only if “Scale entire sketch at first dimension” is turned on in Preferences

The preference option “Scale entire sketch at first dimension” enables you scale the entire sketch when you place your first dimension on it. If you have this option turned on, than you’ll be glad to know that Fusion 360 will also Auto-fit the window to sketch after it has been scaled on first dimension. This should make it easier to see the sketch as a whole, if your scaled sketch turns out to be bigger than your viewing area, or conversely too small for your viewing area.

I do have "Scale entire sketch at first dimension" turned on, and sketches do rescale proportionately around the first-applied dimension. However, there's no zooming or "fit to window" going on; the zoom remains as it was before the first dimension was applied.

Is this feature something I have to turn on, or is it supposed to be a normal part of "Scale entire sketch at first dimension" now?

Auto fit window will get invoked when, after applying the first dimension the sketch goes outside the canvas or view. If the entire sketch still remains entirely in the view then auto-fit window won't be invoked.

But the What's New does seem to say it should zoom in if the result is a small sketch. With a bit more testing it does work for small results but only if the resulting sketch ends up off screen. This is not really very helpful, see screencast below.

@rohit.bapat wrote: Auto fit window will get invoked when, after applying the first dimension the sketch goes outside the canvas or view. That will help us understanding the issue better.

Ah, very helpful - thanks for the response, Rohit. I could make a screencast if it would be helpful, but it does seem to behave exactly as you describe.

But as long as you're looking at this, could I pitch you on an alternate behavior?

On my screen, a new sketch seems to default to a visible area of about 240mm wide by 160mm high. (As far as I can tell, there is no way to set a default for this. But if there is, I'd like to know about it!)

In many cases I'm designing parts for 3D printing, so 30mm on a side is a more typical scale for many of these projects. That's almost an order of magnitude smaller.

I like to start drawing sketches at a "comfortable" size, using perhaps 50% of the available screen area. But when I apply that first dimension, the whole sketch currently shrinks by ~10X down to the size of a postage stamp.

The behavior I'd really like to see is that the view scale is automatically adjusted so the visual display remains the same. No zooming, no shrinking, no visual change at all. Logically, it would be a shrink in the model scale (as is currently implemented) followed by a zoom-in that exactly restores the original on-screen size.

If the model expands to overflow the window after dimensioning, the current (just-implemented) behavior seems right: just do a Fit.

@rohit.bapat After experimenting with this a bit I really don't like this feature, is there a way to disable it? The problem is it zooms out to fit the model not the sketch, so if you're working on a small sketch on a large model it zooms out way too far! It would be great if it zoomed in OR out to fit the sketch on the first dimension though.

Here's a quick screencast that shows the problem with a small sketch on a large model, the zoom out is way too much and you'll waste time zooming back in.

Hello @GRSnyder

Thank you for the interesting input. I will pass these thoughts to the stakeholders.

Meanwhile there is a functionality that is available is setting a view as home or setting a view as From/Top. It is under the View Cube options. Here user can set certain view as home view. This stores camera view (angle) as well as zoom factor.

I think this can fix your problem to a certain level.

Thank you for reporting the issue. It clearly looks like a bug since the auto zoom fit on first dimension is supposed to work on and with the sketches only. Body size should not have come into calculation. I will log a bug first thing on Monday.
