I have a model prepared in Fusion which consists of line bodies only, i.e., lines and points. No Solid bodies except one that too is used just for reference.

How do I export my model? I want to perform some simulations to test its performance. Step, IGES, SAT, OBJ file formats are failing to export the line bodies.

Hi,

Are you talking about sketches?

Sketches are not exported in these formats.

günther

Yes, actually. Just that the sketches are used to make a 3D model of a frame. I've heard IGES can be used for the purpose. In the forum for Inventor I even got to see what settings one needs to make in IGES format to fulfil the purpose. But anyway, what would you suggest me to do?

Hi!

I couldn't get your point clearly. Did you mean to say "Why not use solid bodies instead?"?

Assuming this to be the point, I actually wanted to perform some line body analyses for various reasons.

Hi,

This is not my world, but can't you convert solids to line bodies in the target application?

günther

I'm not sure if it can be done or how to do it in Ansys(which is the target application). But again, if there's a way to export line bodies, why opt for an indirect way which may bring more complications afterwards.

One thing I'd like to mention that I somehow managed to get it exported as a line body model. The method involved a very indirect approach. First I exported it to DWG format, then imported the model to AutoCAD using which, I converted it to IGS format, and finally was able to import it in Ansys.

Thank you for the advice though🙂. Will explore on it.

Hi! Hope you're doing well.

I wanted to update you that I tried the method you suggested. I exported my model as solid bodies and later in the target application converted the members to beams. So essentially, the objective was achieved. However, as I expressed as a concern earlier, using this method led to some undesirable outcomes as well. The geometry had to be repaired but even after that, there were some small imperfections. Although, these imperfections were very small and could be neglected, they were still there. To avoid those only was I curious to know if there is a better method out there.

Would be grateful for some suggestions!
