Hello

I think I came across a bug related to the timeline.

On a few occasions, in different designs (different files) I ran into problems opening sketches.

I realized that for some reason the sketches ended up before the actual component was created in the timeline. That is to the left of the component creation icon.

In fact, very often, when I drag a timeline event icon (ex: extrude, hole, joint...) it ends up landing somewhere completely different from the place I actually dropped it at!

Also, when dragging an icon through the timeline very often it will get stuck. So I have no other choice than to drop it. And then I have to drag it once again in order to continue moving it to where I need it to be.

It is my understanding that a sketch cannot be dragged to the left of the actual component creation icon because it is against the hierarchy.

How does this happen then?

Thanks

The main reason a sketch would be to the left is if your resultant feature was specified as 'new component'. If so, you'd be creating a component from the sketch profile rather than prior to and including the sketch.

Secondly, you are not dragging icons, you are rearranging the timeline! Features do not get stuck or drop randomly somewhere, they are unable to be moved prior to features they are dependent on. So when rearranging they will stop at the point where moving them further would result in broken relationships.

Do not think of them as 'event' icons. But they are the actual operations listed as they were created and as they are computed in time. From the help documentation:

Timeline: Lists operations performed in your design. Right-click operations in the timeline to make changes. Drag operations to change the order in which they are calculated. (Parametric Modeling mode only)

I'm not quite sure I understand it.

Here's is another example. Just happened today.

Circled in red is the component I am having trouble with. I created the components at the root level. Then I activated it and created a sketch. The sketch is that component's child. then I used an extrude and fillet. Again, both actions are children of the component.

In a normal world, unless I am totally confused here, when you create a component at root level, the actions under that component are shown in the timeline under a different colour strip. For example look at the timeline portion for another component - circled in blue. You can clearly see the creation of a component at root level. Then you see a GAP. And then a pink strip with the actions of this component. I want to stress on important thing here: I CANNOT DRAG THESE ACTIONS TO THE LEFT OF THE COMPONENT CREATION ACTION since these actions are children of that component creation action. Right?

Nevertheless, for some weird reason, I CAN drag the actions in the red circle to the LEFT of the component creation action?! And if you look closely, THERE IS NO GAP?!

These actions, for some strange reason, ended up somewhere in the beginning of the timeline, way before the actual component was created???! How? And when I was trying to edit the sketch, it was opening the sketch editing mode, but showing no sketch. Basically I was working on an orphan sketch...

Is it me not understanding something or is this a bug?

Thanks!

Here, I just created the same component from scratch, and here is how it appears on the timeline. And I CANNOT drag the actions to the left of the component creation action.

I will try to upload the file a bit later. But in the meantime I just want to understand something. Is it possible for a sketch along with the operations performed on it (extrude, hole, chamfer...) to somehow appear to the left (before) the component creation operation? Wouldn't that violate the parent-child hierarchy?

"Is it possible for a sketch along with the operations performed on it (extrude, hole, chamfer...) to somehow appear to the left (before) the component creation operation?"

Is it expected? No. In theory this should never happen, for exactly the reasons you describe here, very eloquently. Is it possible? It must be, because you have somehow caused that to happen. So, there is clearly some bug in Fusion where this supposedly impossible occurrence can happen. We have seen a small number of designs like this, which is further evidence that the bug exists somewhere.

However... We have not yet been able to discover what sequence of actions causes this to occur. That's where maybe you can help. If you have ANY idea what action occurred when this state occurs, that could help us a lot. You say that you do reorder features in the timeline. That is a clue. As you've found, though, most times, we block you from dragging a feature to an illegal location. So, there must be some other factor involved. Was the timeline rolled back? Was a component active at the time? Is there some special feature involved that maybe is not correctly tracking its dependencies? Were you dragging a lot of features at the same time? Etc. We just need that repeatable set of steps in order to fix it.

Thanks for getting back to me Jeff.

All the tree times it happened I was at the root level, somewhere near the end of the timeline. I was trying to re-group all operations together in the timeline at root level. Not that it would change something but more for aesthetic reasons / housekeeping (maybe not a good practice).

I was grabbing about 3-5 items at the time, and trying to drag them to the left. The marker was showing the location where it was supposed to land. But once dropped, Fusion would freeze (without showing the green progress bar in the bottom right with calculation percentage). After some 15 sec or so it would unfreeze but what I dropped was not there anymore. It would somehow end up close the beginning of the timeline to the left of its component creation operation.

And by the way I have this sort of issues quite often. When I drag and drop an operation it ends up in some arbitrary place way farther to the left than I was aiming for.
The timeline was NOT rolled back at all.

I will upload one of the designs in which it has happened.

It ended up somewhere almost in the beginning of the timeline instead of falling back into it's original place.
