I thought part numbers (under 'Properties') might be useful for keeping track of components, as they can be used in an automated BOM in assembly drawings. However, I can find no way of searching files by part number, either in Fusion or through the web interface, which to me would be the whole point of using them. Can anyone correct me on this?

You are correct, the component properties Part Number is not searchable from the data panel.

I'm not aware of any plans to implement this specific feature, but part management more broadly fits into the Manage extension. Now i would caution that this issue of searching part numbers may not be in manage but the ability to assign unique trackable numbers is. https://www.autodesk.com/campaigns/fusion-360/manage-extension

That looks like it adds some useful features. Unfortunate that it requires I pay north of £400 a year on top of my existing subscription.

The only way of doing this is via the Manage extension, which applies Part numbers that are searchable. Please note that i'm not aware of custom part numbers, only the assigned sequential numbers applied by Manage Extension.

For example, this assembly has applied part numbers within an unlinked assembly:

And these part numbers are searchable:

Parts created in a linked assembly will search similarly.

And as far as i'm aware there is still no way to do this in core Fusion without the manage extension.

It is very ridiculous. Autodesk is not a new start-up company for the cad software sector. They have to update the part number searching unit urgently. Even if all of their team should not sleep and be quick to solve this problem. Most of SME companies need this feature. Manage extension is not suitable for this method. because we do not use the manage extension module. their support team tries to solve our management team administration issues. however, they failed.

I agree, and I've noticed other CAD software also lack a descent tool to search for a part by the name that you assigned to it in the browser, may it be a part number or just a custom part with a name.

For example: I've imported a nut from McMaster and used it in my assembly, but now I need to find it in my design tree browser as I'm unsure of the location, because the assembly is large... I know my McMaster part number, but not sure where it is in the CAD file that has 300 parts and assemblies. I do not want to assign a new part number in this case (as our PDM generates those # numbers elsewhere) I just need to find it.
