Cannot open Inventor parts in Fusion 360

I have the Personal edition of Fusion 360, and I previously used Inventor for some projects. I have some .ipt files that I would like to edit in Fusion 360, but they are not editable. This is not the intended behavior, where I am supposed to be able to edit the file/part natively as noted in the documentation. As a sanity check, I signed up for an Inventor trial and Inventor had no problems with the files.

I have performed the following steps and get the following errors. I am using Fusion 360 desktop for windows version Fusion 2.0.20981 x86_64 with Active Plan: Personal on an up-to-date Windows 10 computer. The file "Stickyback.ipt" was created with Inventor 2019 or newer, not sure on the exact version.

When trying to upload to the cloud (through F360) first rather than open directly, it shows as the following,

then opens the following page on the team hub site with no ability to edit the file.

I contacted support, but they just told me to make a post here on the forum.

If you right click the file in the browser is there an option to convert to a Fusion design?

I opened the Fusion Help page you listed in your Forum post and I think you have missed the fact that Inventor files are not supported by a Fusion Personal License. You can Upload them to your Web Database where they can be viewed and shared but you cannot open them in Fusion Personal License.

It does not give any option to convert to a Fusion design on the cloud or the application. Clicking "Open in Application" on the website just creates an error within Autodesk Desktop Connector for "Application not found."

On the table above that, it shows that Inventor .ipt files are supported for all license types.

@Phil.E Can you take a look at this? It does look like you should be able to open Inventor files with the personal version from the info on this page.

Also the wording for the additional formats seems wrong because some formats are on both lists.

These formats are supported for all license types except Personal Use.

@g-andresen That page is not very clear at all about what you can import\export. I assume you can import all listed but only export the the ones with the tick. Would be a lot clearer if there were 2 columns, one for import and one for export.

Here is what Fusion for free users imports/translates via the data panel. These can be used in Fusion modeling.

You can upload many file types and they will be viewable in Fusion Team. For 3D models like Inventor files, you can fully orbit, measure, markup, etc. them in Fusion Team with the free version.

I agree with @HughesTooling about what the information conveys in the chart and it is misleading at best. The documentation should be updated to show what formats are supported for import (as in, actually being able to modify the parts/assemblies) and export. Ideally Fusion 360 should be updated to support the file types that are made by other Autodesk products or a conversion tool.

Here's to hoping that a open format will be developed and widely implemented so the issues with a file only being compatible with a specific version of a specific product from a specific company will be a thing of the past. A man can dream...
