Unable to select entire extrusion at once

Hello,

I'm VERY new at Fusion 360. I'm working on a guitar body. I inserted a DFX, which I exported from V Carve Pro. I then extruded it, but the extrusion seems to exist as multiple pieces. I'd like to be able to click on the entire extrusion with one click.

Sorry if this doesn't make sense. Like I said, I'm very new.

can you explain a bit more what you mean by "multiple pieces"? Do you mean multiple faces? If so, that is an effect, likely, of using DXF. Some DXF exporters push out a LOT of small curves. But, I think we need more info, including maybe the model, to say for sure.

question. I just don't know enough of the terminology yet to ask my
question more clearly. I've included a screenshot of my project. This

Sorry, but the image did not come through. Did you respond to the email, or directly on the forum in a web browser? You'll have to use a web browser to attach images, etc. Also, while you are at it, if possible, attach the DXF as well - you may have to convert that to a zip file to successfully attach it.

sorry for the delay. Yes, the picture came through this time. I can see what you are talking about. It is the multiple faces around the body. And, yes, this is because of the use of the DXF for the body outline. That DXF geometry is not going to be directly usable. I would recommend that you re-draw the outline using a fit point spline or a control point spline. It should only take a few minutes, and the results will be much better. If you share the DXF here, I can demonstrate the process.

Thank you for your response and thank you for all of your help. I kind of figured that was going to be the case, so I took some time to learn about using control point splines. I'll be sure to ask more if I need help.

Hi Jeff,

I'm wondering if you're able to take a look at an issue I'm having. I'm trying to create a contour on my guitar body. I've sketched one fit point spline on the base plane and another on a Z plane. I then used the splines to split the faces of the guitar body (back and sides). See image below

My next step was to delete the surface faces

My next step would be to patch the surface faces to create the contour. However, I can't seem to get the endpoints of the splines lined up and it won't allow me to patch. I'm wondering if this is because I'm sketching on two different planes.

Any help is sincerely appreciated!

@kirkj3HL58 - This is somewhat of a common topic among the Fusion guitar makers out there (me being one of them, although, sadly, it has been a couple of years, now, since I've had time to do another one). There are quite a few ways to model this. I suspect that your model will continue to be frustrating, although could probably be made to work if you are really committed to it. But, first, check out these other threads. I think some of these might turn out to be easier in the long run:

I thought I was doing it correctly, but can't seem to get the endpoints on the two splines to line up. I'll keep researching to see what I'm doing wrong.

ahh... I suspect that the key step in Phil's video was here:

when he is sketching that second spline, and is able to snap to the endpoints of the first spline. I suspect that he has this option turned on in that video:

What that does is to automatically project those spline endpoints into the active sketch, ensuring that they will correctly meet up on the body. Instead, you can manually project those points to get the same effect. Here is my version of that video, with the manual projection step added:

That totally worked!

However, the sketch shows up on treble side of the guitar on the extrusion.

Any idea what I'm doing wrong here?

I'd have to see the design to be sure. Can you share it here? But, if you selected more than one face for the Split Face operation, or used Split Body instead, you might see something like that result.

if you are OK with others seeing it, the easiest way is to export it as a "Fusion Archive (F3D)" file, and attach it to your next response here. If you'd rather share it privately, if the export is relatively small, you could just email it to me at jeff.strater@autodesk.com, or else put it on DropBox or some other file sharing site, and DM me the link to it.

Your attached model is empty, the file size is very small indicating it was not exported correctly. Make sure your timeline is all the way to the right and the go to File, Export, save to your hard drive by a different name and then try an attach it again. As a test to see if it worked, download it and try to open it yourself.
